Officers from the force were called to New Eltham shortly after 5am on Sunday. Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service arrived but the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.
The baby’s mother is receiving medical attention.
No arrests have been made.
According to MailOnline, the exact location where the infant’s body was found has not been made public due to the sensitive nature of the case.

A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police said: “An investigation is ongoing after police were called shortly after 5:00am on Sunday, January 30, to the body of a newborn baby found in New Eltham.
“Officers attended the location along with London Ambulance Service.
“Sadly, the baby was pronounced dead.
“A post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances.
“There has been no arrest at this stage.

“Officers are in contact with the baby’s mother, who is receiving medical attention.
“Police are not providing any further information at this point.”
