Met Office issues weather warning as 60mph winds set to batter UK

The UK is set to be blasted by 60mph winds that could force road closures and topple trees, the Met Office has warned.

It’s feared the powerful gusts could turn into a ‘much deeper system’ bringing the risk of severe gales around coasts and across the centre of the country.

The rain and winds mark a significant shift following the sizzling temperatures seen at the end of June.

A yellow warning for wind is in place from north of Glasgow and Edinburgh in Scotland to almost Manchester and Hull in England.

Buildings could be damaged and powerlines brought down, which could impact mobile networks, the Met Office said.

There is also a risk to the public with the storms having the potential to blow tiles from rooftops, while people near the coast should take precautions to avoid large waves or ‘beach material’ being thrown from sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.

In a statement the Met Office said: ‘An area of low pressure is expected to develop over the Atlantic and track eastwards across central Scotland during Sunday with strong winds developing across a large swathe of the UK.

‘Gusts of  50-60 mph are most likely over and to the east of high ground, particularly the Pennines which may lead to some travel disruption.

‘With trees in full leaf, fallen branches and damaged trees may cause some localised travel and power disruption.

‘While there is high confidence in the development of the low pressure system, there is the potential for a much deeper system with stronger winds and a risk of severe gales around coasts and through the Central Belt.’

The storms are currently predicted to last through until about 4pm today, July 5.

Temperatures across the country are expected to range from between a high of about 16C in the north of the country to around 21C further south.
