Robert Oulds, director of the Bruges Group, was speaking in the wake of the Duchess of Sussex’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, alongside husband Prince Harry. During the course of the two-hour talk, she said: “You know, three days before our wedding, we got married.

“The vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury.”

The revelation prompted numerous Twitter users to press Archbishop Justin Welby to offer an explanation, with some questioning the legality of such arrangements.

And Mr Oulds agreed, telling Express.co.uk: “That is a highly dubious claim.

“It cannot be right that she married Prince Harry in private, without witnesses, three days before the royal wedding.”

He added: “Weddings require witnesses, and to be open to the public, to be lawful under English law, and it is unlawful to get remarried to the same person as would have supposedly happened at the royal wedding.”

Mr Oulds suggested: “I think she must have been confused with the rehearsal.

Mr Oulds outlined his concerns about the role played by the Sussexes in Moralitis: A Cultural Virus, the book which he and Niall McCrae, a senior lecturer in mental health at Kings College London, published last year.

In it, they accused Meghan, whom Mr Oulds describes as a “woke warrior”, of imposing a set of values on the Prince, while probably ”looking down” on Royals.

Speaking to Express.co.uk after the publication of the book, Mr Oulds said he believed Meghan had “turned” Prince Harry into a “snowflake” and the Duke has “changed” since meeting Meghan.

He added: “Meghan has turned Harry from a soldier serving his country into a woke warrior.

“The Royal Family and the Monarchy is a key British institution, a crucial part of both our unwritten constitution and our national identity.

“The Monarchy is highly respected in Britain, the Commonwealth, and the world over.

“For that reason, the woke brigade want to smash all that is great about it.

“The aim is to have a year zero in British life and sweep away our loyalty to our country, Queen, and flag.

“It is no surprise that in the Meghan versus the Queen debate, Republicans side with the one that thinks she knows best.”

Mr Oulds warned: “She married into the Royal Family and immediately began to undermine this bastion of British heritage.

“The House of Windsor would need a complete overhaul to accommodate Meghan’s superior outlook on the world.”

A spokesman for Lambeth Palace told Express.co.uk yesterday: “The Archbishop does not comment on personal or pastoral matters so we aren’t commenting.”
