Meghan Markle’s father hopes reconciliation between the Duke of Sussex and Prince of Wales could help reunite his own family. Thomas Markle, 78, watched the Queen’s funeral with his son Thomas Jr and was heartened to see William and Harry making a show of unity.
The Duchess of Sussex’s dad has not been able to get hold of his daughter, whose wedding ceremony he missed due to a heart attack.
He has also never met his son-in-law, or his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet.
Meghan’s stepbrother Thomas Jr told the Sunday Mirror: “We both watched clips of the Queen’s funeral together.
“I was overcome with emotion at how every person spectating was honoured to be there and respectful.”
Meghan, 41, joined an emotional walkabout to greet well-wishers at Cambridge Gate outside Windsor Castle with her husband and the Prince and Princess of Wales.
Thomas Jr, 56, in an address to Meghan, said: “Dad treated you like a princess your entire life and deserves the respect.
“You didn’t call him for his heart attacks or stroke, but it’s never too late.”
On his father’s battle with ill health, he said: “I take him to speech therapy every week and a full recovery is on the horizon.”

“He’s in good spirits and he’s getting his voice back. Some days are good, some are not so good. Full recovery, we hope, is in the near future.”
He called on the Duchess to take steps to heal the rift, adding: “I’d like to send this invitation for her to do the right thing and make amends with her father.
“But she also has to make amends with our sister Samantha and myself.
“Everyone makes mistakes. It’s never too late to do the right thing.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been approached for comment.
Harry and Meghan’s bonds with King Charles III and Prince William had been strained, but the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8 saw the families’ ties reestablish.
In his first address to the nation, King Charles spoke of his love for Harry and Meghan.
After outlining new roles for his oldest son and his wife, the King said: “I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”
Although the Duke stepped back from royal duties and was not allowed to wear military uniform for the occasion, he took his place alongside William during their late grandmother’s state funeral.
Harry and Meghan also joined the group of royals who made their way to Windsor and took part in the committal service and interment, which saw the Queen laid to rest alongside the brothers’ grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh.
It came after bombshell interviews given by the Sussexes in which the couple made a number of claims, including that the royal family was racist.
Recently, Meghan’s interview with The Cut hit the headlines as the former Suits actor said it takes “a lot of effort” to forgive and hinted she can “say anything”.
Meghan said “just by existing” she and Harry had upset “the dynamic of the hierarchy” before they stepped down as working royals.
While in The Hague for the Invictus Games earlier this year, Harry was interviewed by NBC’s Today show and appeared to issue a veiled warning to those closest to Queen Elizabeth II, saying he wanted to make sure his grandmother was “protected” and had “the right people around her”.
He did not elaborate on whether he was referring to royal aides or members of his family, but his comments likely deepened the rift with his father and brother besides perplexing palace officials.
Meanwhile, the Royal Family has been bracing itself for Harry’s forthcoming tell-all book, which he has vowed will be an “accurate and wholly truthful” account of his life.
The memoirs are expected to be published in late 2022 by Penguin Random House but a release date has yet to be confirmed. Some sources have suggested parts of the book are to be rewritten in the wake of the Queen’s death as Harry seeks to soften its impact.
Before the Queen’s funeral, Harry and Meghan attended her Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June, but kept out of the limelight for most of the weekend.
It remains unclear whether they will attend the coronation of King Charles III.
Whether differences will be put aside in a bid to heal the rift for good and if this would signal a return to them becoming a more permanent fixture once more in future royal events, also remains to be seen.
