Meghan would be a ‘hypocrite’ if she accepts Met Gala invite – expert
Meghan Markle’s Met Gala appearance discussed by Di Russo
Meghan Markle faces “hypocrisy” charge if she chooses to accept any invite to the annual Met Gala extravaganza, a royal commentator has suggested. The Duchess of Sussex could be set to make her highly-publicised debut at the glamour event in New York on May 1, where she would join a host of Hollywood A-listers. The huge celebration of fashion, organised and presided over by Vogue magazine’s Anna Wintour, regularly attracts A-list celebrities, including Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Madonna and Rihanna.
Much specualtion has swirled around the former Suits actress’ possible attendance at the glitzy event but she could face a fierce backlash if she does attend.
Sky News Australia host Rita Panahi said in conversation with fellow host Caroline Di Russo: “This is being called another example of her hypocrisy.
“The duchess is apparently going to be making her Met Gala debut. That is strange behaviour for someone who supposedly values their privacy and just wants to live a simple life.”
Di Russo alleged: “Hypocrisy is probably the thing that Meghan is best at. This doesn’t surprise me or anyone.
“This is a big Vogue event. We know Anna Wintour has always tried to have as many celebrities, even on the covers of magazines or at the Met Gala. That is what draws attention to this event.
“You wouldn’t go and do an interview with Oprah, you wouldn’t have a Netflix series, there wouldn’t be books, podcasts, partridges and pear trees if you didn’t want to live the quiet, simple and private life so this for me is pretty much on brand.”
The outburst comes after it was claimed Meghan and Harry would spark “epic drama” and a flurry of headlines if they manage to bag themselves an invite to this year’s Met Gala.
Speculation has been growing over recent weeks about whether the couple will be invited, but a leading celebrity PR expert has poured cold water on claims they won’t go.
The A-list extravaganza takes place on May 1 – five days before the Coronation of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey in London, which Harry has announced he will be attending.
Meghan will not be making the trip across the Atlantic, instead remaining at home in Montecito, California with the couple’s two young children – Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Mayah Riaz told The Mirror before the Coronation announcement: “The speculation that Meghan and Harry won’t receive invites to the Met Gala because of the drama surrounding them is quite frankly hilarious.

“When you think of the Met Gala, you think if drama. It’s synonymous with epic drama. By having Harry and Meghan at the Met Gala will certainly bring in extra headlines and maybe scrutiny too.”
But there have also been claims Harry and Meghan could get “snubbed” at this year’s Met Gala event after making a series of claims against the Royal Family at the start of this year.
Speaking before the Coronation announcement, Jordan James, CEO of Unlockd PR, said: “Looking ahead to the Met Gala – which is arguably Hollywood’s most prestigious red-carpet event – it currently remains unclear whether Prince Harry and Meghan will receive an invite or not.
“It certainly wouldn’t come as a major surprise if they were snubbed given their current status within the Royal Family and the ensuing drama.”
Mr James believes it remains to be seen whether the Sussexes attend the Met Gala, and many believing they will be keen to show up given the event’s prestige.
He noted: “Attending these occasions can help boost their [Meghan and Harry] public perception in America.”
But the PR expert predicts the couple will not want to attract that level of attention so near to the Coronation of King Charles III a few days later.
“I believe that even if the couple does receive an invite, they aren’t likely to attend as they will undoubtedly face scrutiny, no matter how hard they may try to minimise fallout – especially with how close this event is to the Royal Coronation,” said James.
Furthermore, he also believes Harry and Meghan’s absence from a string of glitzy events over the last few months may suggest a shift in strategy.
The PR expert added: “While the couple isn’t always known for laying low, I think we are beginning to see a shift in how they want to be presented – whether this is truly by choice though we may never know.”
