Prince Harry was “proud” of his father for being the one to “literally welcome” Meghan Markle into the Royal Family, according to commentators. Prince Charles’ “important” role in the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s 2018 royal wedding was highlighted in the wake of reports of tension between the Prince of Wales and his son. Channel 5 documentary, ‘Charles & Harry: Father and Son Divided’, explored why Harry asked his father to play a significant role.

Mail on Sunday Royal Editor Emily Andrews explained: “Meghan’s father, infamously, didn’t come to the UK for her wedding.

“He said he had heart problems and he was in hospital.”

Biographer Angela Levin added: “There was a question of who would walk Meghan down the aisle.

“Prince Harry asked for his father. What could be better than having the heir to the British throne walk your beautiful bride down the aisle?”

Ms Andrews described the moment during the ceremony: “[Charles] proffered his arm, [Meghan] took it.

“He says, ‘You look lovely’. She says, ‘Thank you’.

“They process up to the altar and there’s Harry.

“He turns to Charles and says ‘Thanks, Pa’.”

Prince Harry 'emotional' at Charles and Meghan at wedding

The commentator continued: “It’s such a touching moment between father and son.

“He’s so proud of his soon-to-be wife, but also so proud of his father.

“Charles is literally welcoming Meghan into the Royal Family in such a kind way.”

Relationship psychologist Anjula Mutanda gave insight into the significance of the gesture.
