Meghan Markle’s protection officer left ’embarrassed’ after having to follow her demands

Meghan Markle, 37, attended Wimbledon last week in a private capacity to cheer on her close friend Serena Williams. But tennis fan Sally Jones, who was in attendance at the event along with thousands of spectators, was taking pictures of Serena Williams when Meghan’s protection officer tapped her on the shoulder and said ‘would you not take pictures of the Duchess, she is here in a private capacity’.

I felt sorry for him because I think he was following orders

Ms Jones told ITV’s This Morning: “They obviously thought that I was about to or that it had crossed my mind.”

But when the onlooker made a joke to Megan’s protection officer, he was left “very embarrassed”.

Ms Jones added: “I wasn’t actually taking her picture. I said to the protection officer ‘I am here in a private capacity but if I wanted to take a picture of anybody in the stadium, which I don’t apart from Serena Williams, but if I did then I would have a perfect right including Meghan to take her picture.”

In response to the joke, the protection officer looked “awkward”.

She added: “I felt sorry for him because I think he was following orders, and I think that he was embarrassed and it was awkward.”

Ms Jones said she “almost burst out laughing” at the peculiarity of the situation.

But a royal source has said the photo ban was to let her “engage with people rather than camera phones”.

They said: “It’s not uncommon for personal protection officers accompanying any members of the Royal Family to ask people not to take pictures so they can engage with people and events rather than camera phones.”

Meghan and Harry’s quest for privacy is causing a stir among royal fans, who were upset to hear that the royal couple decided to have a private christening for their son Archie.

An overwhelming 82 percent (2,566) of Express.co.uk readers said Meghan and Prince Harry are wrong to keep details of the christening private.

This was compared to 16 percent (511) of readers who said ‘yes’ when asked: “are Meghan and Harry right to keep Archie’s christening private?”.

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was baptised on Saturday, exactly two months after he was born.

Archie was christened inside the Private Chapel of Windsor Castle, which can only accommodate up to 30 guests.

The palace announced: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to share the happiness of this day, and would like to thank everyone around the world for their ongoing support.

“They feel so fortunate to have enjoyed this special moment with family and Archie’s godparents.”
