The Duchess of Sussex lamented the fact she had “lost” her father Thomas Markle, who she no longer speaks to, in her interview with the US TV legend, which aired tonight on ITV. Thomas has spoken to the media numerous times about his daughter, contributing to their relationship breakdown and causing her to write a letter to him asking him to stop. This letter became the centre of a lawsuit in which it was found Associated Newspapers had breached Meghan’s privacy by publishing extracts of the letter in the Mail on Sunday and MailOnline.

Thomas will appear on Good Morning Britain tomorrow morning to talk about the Oprah interview.

However, one royal watcher argued that Meghan speaking about the Royal Family to Oprah is not any different than what her father did to her.

Pod Save the Queen is hosted by Ann Gripper and features Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers.

Ms Gripper read out comments from the podcast’s listeners which they left on Instagram and one royal fan had a particularly poignant insight.

They argued that, like Meghan, Thomas wanted to put his side of the story across.

He wanted to get good publicity in the hope of countering the bad things that were being said about him.

Meghan was upset with him for making private matters a public display, yet she is now doing the same thing with her interview.

The commenter said: “What is the point of doing a tell-all interview? Just publicity and money.

“Meghan wants her voice heard, but how is she any different to what her dad did to her when he did photos and interviews for money?

“He too wanted his side told.

“They are wealthy, have a happy, healthy little family and can do great things with their work.

“Why cause hurt, anger and alienate family members just so you can cash in and dominate every news cycle around the world?

“It’s actually all very sad.”

Ms Gripper said: “I think sad is a word you and I have used repeatedly over the past year as we have watched them break down.”

Mr Myers said: “It’s a disintegration of a family and I think that is the saddest thing about all of this.

“Meghan has already seen the complete disintegration of her relationship with her father beyond repair and he’s a sick man, as we’re led to believe ‒ I mean, he’s said it himself.

“But now this is the disintegration of the relationship with the Royal Family.”

Meghan opened up about what really happened between her father and her in the days before her wedding.

Thomas was found to have staged paparazzi photographs of him being measured for a suit and reading a book about British landmarks.

He then suffered a heart attack and was in hospital when his daughter married instead of walking her down the aisle.

The Duchess accused her father of lying to her when she asked him whether he was working with the press.

Meghan said: “We called my dad and I asked him and he said ‘no, absolutely not’.”

She claimed she told him: “The institution has never intervened in anything for us but they can try to go in and kill this story, but if we do this once, we’re not going to be able to use that same leveredge to protect our own kids one day… If you tell me the truth, we can help.”

The Duchess said he was “not able to do that” and that it has resonated with her ever since.
