Meghan Markle’s ‘online baby shower’ sees charity donations SKYROCKET – ‘We’re blown away’
Termed as an “online baby shower” three of Meghan’s charities were chosen yesterday in a campaign that went viral on Twitter. Such was the incredible amount that fans from all round the world donated that it lead to one charity announcing that it was completely “floored” and grateful for the amount given. Using the hashtag, “Global Sussex Baby Shower” donations for Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED), the Mayhew, an animal welfare charity and the Well Child Awards, which celebrates the UK’s brave young children all kicked off on Sunday.
After receiving some incredible support on Mother’s Day yesterday, CAMFED released a statement thanking the donors.
They tweeted on their account: “All you amazing, warm-hearted & generous people: You completely floored us today when you started sending your support and donations. You’ve made our year!”
The campaign began thanks to a Meghan fan account,’Freepeeper’ that called on users to donate to her favourite charities in honour of Mother’s Day.
In a tweet, they wrote: “We’re kicking off a global fundraiser on Sunday March 31 in honour of Baby Sussex and the compassion and altruism of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”
Meghan recently joined CAMFED executive director Angie Murimirwa on International Woman’s Day in what was yet another organisation that the Duchess has thrown her support behind.
After donating to one of the organisations, one Twitter user said: “Strangers all across the world coming together to show support to charities, making a difference in children, animals and young women’s lives.
“We should all be proud of the Global Sussex baby shower.”
Another user said: “This is so incredible and creating a real positive impact – this is what social media should be for! Great job everyone.”
The charity push comes as Meghan prepares to give birth to her first child this month.
Before she entered her maternity break, Meghan attended the Commonwealth Day service.
The Queen recently made Meghan Vice President of the Commonwealth Trust.
She was also named patron of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
