The Duchess of Sussex praised the “inspirational” work of the Hubb Community Kitchen, which she has been involved with for a couple of years now. The initiative was set up to provide support and hot meals for bereaved families in the aftermath of the horror of the Grenfell Tower fire, which killed 72 people and destroyed the homes of many more on June 14, 2017. Meghan made several visits to the Hubb as part of her official duties as a royal, but has kept in touch since stepping down as a senior royal and even held a Zoom call with volunteers in April.

Back in 2018, Meghan championed the charity cookbook ‘Together: Our Community Cookbook’, designed to raise money to support victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.

It was her first official solo project after she married Prince Harry in May that year.

At the book’s launch event, Meghan’s mum Doria Ragland made a surprise appearance, her first royal event since the Royal Wedding.

What’s more, Doria was overheard introducing herself in a very sweet, informal way: “Hi, I’m Meg’s mum.”

The mother and daughter duo spoke to the volunteers at the outdoor reception at Kensington Palace and Meghan even got involved with some of the cooking.

Doria, a Californian social worker, was reportedly “head over heels” with pride at her daughter’s involvement with the charity project.

She expressed her delight at being able to meet the women behind the recipes in the book.

She said: “I’m so glad I can put the face with the recipes.

“I’m going to tell everyone ‘I met her’. I’m going to make everything. I’m serious.”

In her first speech since becoming a royal, Meghan said: “Working on this project for the past nine months has been a tremendous labour of love.”

For months, the Duchess had been privately visiting the cooks in preparation for the book.

The funds raised from the book went towards the Hubb Community Kitchen for Grenfell survivors.

With recipes inspired by dishes from the Middle East, North Africa and Europe, the cookbook celebrated the diversity of culture in London.

Meghan said to guests: “I had just recently moved to London and I felt so immediately embraced by the women in the kitchen ‒ your warmth, your kindness, and also to be able to be in this city and see in this one small room how multicultural it was.

“On a personal level, I feel so proud to live in a city that can have so much diversity.”

London is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world: a 2000 survey of school children reported there were over 300 languages spoken at home.

In the 2011 census, around 44.9 percent of Londoners are White British, while 37 percent were born outside the UK, including 24.5 percent born outside of Europe.

Meghan donned a black Tux top and matching black skirt for the occasion, with a bright royal blue coat.

The Duchess of Sussex is known to be close to her mother and, at the time, there were rumours Doria was considering moving to London to be near her daughter.

Instead, Meghan and Harry have moved to Los Angeles, where they are currently residing in Tyler Perry’s $18million (£14.6million) mansion with their son Archie Harrison, according to the Daily Mail.

‘Together: Our Community Cookbook’ was written in 2018 by The Hubb Community Kitchen with a foreword from The Duchess of Sussex, published by Ebury Press.
