Buckingham Palace announced the sad news today that Prince Philip has died aged 99. A statement from the Palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. “His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.” He had returned from hospital to Windsor Castle in March after spending nearly a month in hospital, where he underwent a heart procedure.

The Duke was married to Queen Elizabeth II for more than 70 years and became the longest-serving consort in British history.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been more distant from the Royal Family since deciding to leave for the US in January 2020.

Despite their recent royal struggles, they have left an immortalised nod to Philip in their son Archie’s name – showing the strong bond the Sussexes had with Duke.

Archie’s first name was already a subject of debate as it was seen as less traditional than other options.

But his surname – Mountbatten-Windsor – would have pleased Philip given a row that took place in the Royal Family back in the Fifties and Sixties.

After the birth of his first two children Prince Charles and Princess Anne in 1948 and 1950, Philip wanted them to take his surname – Mountbatten.

However, then Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Queen Mary and the Queen Mother all decided “no, this is not going to be the way”.

In 1952, the Queen issued a public declaration saying that “her children will be styled and known as the house and family of Windsor”.

However, Philip continued to fight the issue, and eventually reached a compromise 11 days before Prince Andrew was born in 1960.

It was declared in the Privy Council that the Queen’s descendants, other than those with the style of Royal Highness and the title of Prince or Princess, or female descendants who marry, would carry the name of Mountbatten-Windsor.

As the UK processes the sad news today – there are fears Harry and Meghan may miss Philip’s funeral.

Reports suggest the Sussexes will do their “utmost” to return, but current Government regulations on overseas travels and the Duchess’ pregnancy may make it impossible for the couple to attend the funeral.

This is because people arriving from the US like the Duke and Duchess of Sussex must quarantine for 10 days at either a hotel or a private residence.

The Government’s website reads: “If you’re travelling to England you must either quarantine in the place you’re staying or in a managed quarantine hotel for 10 days because of coronavirus (COVID-19).

“What you need to do depends on where you travel in the 10 days before you arrive in England.

“You must also get two coronavirus tests after you arrive in England. You’ll need to book these before you travel.”

Whether Meghan can travel may also depend on doctors’ advice, given she is pregnant with a baby girl which is due in the summer.
