In September 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle disclosed their deal with Netflix. However in May, it was revealed that Netflix had cut an animation series, titled Pearl, that the Duchess was due to release as part of the streaming deal. It now appears that the project could be back up and running under another company, Elton John’s Rocket Pictures. The singer’s husband David Furnish was also, along with Meghan, going to be credited as producer of the series. Speaking in a recent episode on his YouTube channel, royal expert Sean Neil discussed Pearl and the project’s potential turn-around.
Mr Sean claimed: “Now according to good sources, yes, what we can tell you is this, it looks like Rocket Films, which is a, sort of, offshoot of Elton John’s company could now take on the project [Pearl].”
He added: “Obviously they are seeing something in Pearl that the rest of the people are [have] not seen, production companies and stuff like that.”
The royal expert claimed it is unknown as to whether the project is “going to be co-production or a solo production, with funding outside”.
He added: “Whichever way you look at it, its a brave move to make in anything in this climate that’s not truly known to the public.
“Whichever why you look at it, you know, the public do decide your fate.
“The bigger problem, of course, for Pearl, for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry is not just making it, it’s selling it.”
He added: “You have to get it syndicated and sold in all sort of territories around the world.
“[And] Elton does like to live well so he’ll be wanting a return.”
Meghan Markle: Expert discusses background of 'Pearl' project
On a previous episode of Royally Us, hosts Christine Ross and Christina Garibaldi discussed Netflix axing Pearl.
Ms Garibaldi stated that the show “will not air due to budget cuts”.
She added that it wasn’t just Meghan’s show that got cut and that “there were several other projects” that it happened to as well.
Speakin of the project, Ms Ross stated that the show was about “a young girl of colour who was learning more about strong female role models”, adding, “It was all about empowering young girls, especially women of colour and young girls of colour.”
