In October, Prince William, and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, both 39, attended the inaugural awards ceremony for the Earthshot Prize scheme. The scheme, launched by the prince, awards five winners £1million for their contributions to sustainable innovations.
During the environmental event, the couple announced that in 2022, the ceremony will take place stateside.
Taking to the stage at London’s Alexandra Palace, William said: “London and the UK has put on quite a show for our first year.
“So for the second year, we need to pass the baton to a country whose leadership is essential for all five of our Earthshots.
“Where better than the nation that inspired the Moonshot all those years ago?
“I’m delighted to announce that the Earthshot Prize will be heading to the United States of America in 2022.”
Notably, William’s brother Prince Harry, 37, and his wife Meghan Markle, 40, reside in the states after stepping away from royal duties in 2020.
After taking a step away from the Firm, the Sussexes moved to California where they reside with their two children – Archie, two, and Lilibet who was born in June.
Taking the Earthshot Prize awards to America could provide a means of promoting William and Kate’s image in the US, and could see them undertaking a US tour there too, according to a royal insider.
A royal insider shared their thoughts with Heatworld, claiming that the couple “will most likely stay with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at their home in California” if they were to undertake a US visit.
They said: “Meghan would like some show of commitment from William and Kate, even if it’s a tentative date or time frame to put in the diary for some time next year.
“They haven’t had a single royal visitor since moving to America, which they know is mainly because of Covid, but now that travel restrictions between the US and UK have been lifted, they want that to change.”
This would provide the first instance for the couples to be reunited since the Sussexes left in March 2020.

While Harry, 37, and William have met on two other occasions – for Prince Philip’s funeral, and to unveil a statue of their late mother Princess Diana – the two couples have not reunited as a four.
The insider claims both Harry and Meghan would “think it was weird if they didn’t stay with them”.
The insider also claims that the US visit would be “a great opportunity to mend their bond” with one another.
The insider added: “They’re certain that there would be no better way for them to put aside their differences than by spending quality time together in the California sunshine, away from the meddling and negativity they would have to encounter in England.
“And Meghan feels that they would be playing by her rules because they would be in her home and her home country.”
The insider also claims that now Covid travel restrictions have lessened, it is now more feasible for the Sussexes to host visitors at their Montecito pad.
To tie in with Earthshot Prize Awards sustainability theme, no guests were allowed to fly in from other countries to attend.
As a result, it remains unclear whether the Cambridges would be in attendance for the US ceremony next year.
