While Meghan Markle was not in attendance at the Euro 2020 final, she soon found herself being the centre of attention. The game saw the Three Lions lead 1-0 in the first half thanks to an early Luke Shaw goal, but they were trounced by the Italians’ second half. Ultimately, England lost to Italy after a heartbreaking penalty shootout, narrowly missing out on the nation’s first major trophy since 1966.
Prince William and Kate, Princess of Wales were joined by their eldest son Prince George, who is following in his father’s footsteps as a huge football fan, to watch the nailbiting match. The nine-year-old was seen hugging his parents in celebration when the England goal went in.
The Duchess of Sussex and her husband Prince Harry were not at Wembley Stadium in the summer of 2021 to watch the game, but their presence was felt due to a brutal banner made by some Italian supporters.
A red, white and green Italian flag donned with a particularly bold message could be seen waving in the stands. In black marker pen were the words: “Meghan One Of Us.”
The message was a clear dig at the Royal Family’s rift with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who stepped down from their public duties in early 2020.
While it could have been seen as a friendly gesture towards the former Hollywood actress, it was doubtlessly directed as a wind-up for the England fans.
Since she and Harry stepped down and relocated to the US, Meghan has not received much support from several people in this country; so much so that a lot of her fans claimed the England defeat was “revenge”.
One Sussex supporter wrote on Twitter: “We all prayed in the name of Meghan Markle for Italy to win and they f*g DID!!! #ITA.”
Another fan tweeted: “Thank you Italy for doing it for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. I love watching that country sad it makes me happy.”
“Whatever, I can’t feel sorry for Brits,” a third ruthlessly wrote. “They have been super mean since Meghan and Harry opted to give up their royal duties. And to be honest, Italy played better both in the final and throughout the tournament.”
Following the defeat, others made up some images to mock England fans, including a photoshopped picture of the Duchess holding an Italy flag. To add salt to the wound, they mocked England’s ‘It’s coming home’ chant with the caption: “It’s coming Rome!”
Elsewhere, another Italy fan posted a photograph of the Prince and Princess of Wales, alongside George, looking devastated after the defeat. To poke more fun, they added a picture of Meghan laughing over the top.
Some even started posting images of Meghan at various events wearing red, green and white dresses — the colours of the Italian flag.
According to a poll conducted in August, nearly two-thirds of Britons are unsympathetic towards Meghan and Harry. YouGov asked 2,627 British adults: “From what you have read and heard, how much sympathy, if any, do you have for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle”. Some 43 percent of those surveyed answered that they felt “none at all” with a further 22 percent responding that they felt “not very much”.

A combined 22 percent responded that they felt “a fair amount” or “a lot” of sympathy for the pair and 13 percent answered that they didn’t know.
The survey came as the couple saw a spike in press coverage due to the release of the Duchess’ podcast Archetypes, her candid interview with The Cut and the announcement of the Sussexes’ visit to Europe in the first week of September.
Previous poll data, also provided by YouGov, showed that Harry and Meghan hit their lowest levels of public support in the prince’s home country ahead of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June, which saw the couple return to the UK for the first time with their two children since their royal retirement.
In a survey conducted between May 18 and 19, 65 percent of respondents said they viewed Meghan negatively. This was contrasted by 23 percent who responded that they viewed the Duchess positively and 11 percent that “didn’t know”, making for a total net positive score of -42 — her lowest-ever rating.
However, following the death of Queen Elizabeth in September. Britons came out in support as they mourned with the Royal Family.
Meghan was reassured of the British people’s love and support during this time, particularly following the walkabout outside Windsor Castle, according to royal expert Neil Sean.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex accompanied William and Kate on the Fab Four’s surprise appearance as the royals greeted a crowd of mourners and read tributes.
Writing in a piece for Fox News, Mr Sean wrote an insider told him about Meghan’s view of public perception about her following the Queen’s death.
“I feel the media is wrong. The Brits do like me, and I got to witness that personally,” she reportedly said.
