Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Anna Pasternak, author of The American Duchess: The Real Wallis Simpson, doubted the Duchess of Sussex would ever set foot in the UK again. When asked whether she thought Mrs Markle would return to the UK with her husband, Prince Harry, for the unveiling of the Princess Diana statue this summer, Ms Pasternak said it was an “emphatic no”.

She said: “I think that there is as much likelihood of her returning to the UK this summer, as there is of her reconciling with her father.

“I would not be at all surprised if she never sets foot on British soil again.”

Royal experts are divided on whether the Duke of Sussex will return to the UK this summer to unveil a new statue of his late mother, Princess Diana, with his brother Prince William.

Lady Colin Campbell, a royal author, is one expert who believes Harry will not return this summer.

She said: “He knows that if he comes back he will be met with a wall of ice, not only by the family but by everybody connected to the family and the British public.

“It would be a wise move on his part if he did not come back for it, but it would be an even wiser move if he came back and displayed some element of regret for his behaviour.”

Prince Harry last made a short return to the UK in order to attend the funeral of his grandfather, Prince Philip, who died on April 9.

It was the first time the Prince had reunited with his family in over a year.

Another royal expert, Phil Dampier, believes Prince Harry is unlikely to return to the UK without his wife who is currently expecting a second child.

The couple’s daughter is expected in a few short months, and as a result Meghan was unable to travel back for Philip’s funeral with her husband on doctor’s advice.

However, Ms Pasternak said the pregnancy and the pandemic might just be an excuse in order to keep away from the Royal Family.

She said: “Pregnancy and the pandemic have played into her narrative that it’s impossible for her to return, when the truth is that she has turned her back on Britain and the traditional values that the monarchy stands for in no uncertain terms.”
