Meghan Markle told to ‘wear British labels’ to be UK fashion figurehead – ‘No more French’

Meghan Markle has emerged as one of the most inspirational figures for the fashion industry thanks to her captivating clothing choices and attention to details. The Duchess of Sussex even managed to surpass sister-in-law Kate Middleton as the most influential fashion icon within the Royal Family in little over a year. But fashion expert Lizzi Zita urged Meghan to use her role to better promote British designers and labels rather than relying on global couturiers.

Speaking to Sky News, Ms Zita said: “We need to – Meghan, if you are watching – wear British fashion.

“Wear our labels, don’t always wear Dior. We love Dior but he is French – wear our labels.

“We need you to be like a figurehead for fashion. She is one of the most googled names in the world right now.”

The Duchess indeed opted for French labels on several occasions, including her wedding day – during which she wore a stunning Givenchy gown created by British designer Clare Waight Keller – and the christening of her son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, when she opted for a Dior daytime dress.

As we know, French couture is not inexpensive. But please, if anything, Meghan, buy British

David Emmanuel

The fashion commentator appeared to echo the sentiments designer David Emmanuel voiced earlier this year.

Mr Emmanuel, who designed the wedding dress Princess Diana wore to her wedding to Prince Charles, also called on the Duchess of Sussex to pick more British designers to dress her.

The designer said: “As we know, French couture is not inexpensive. But please, if anything, Meghan, buy British!

“What I find sad, the last couple of royal weddings is they’ve gone off-piste a bit. The Duchess of Sussex for instance, she went to Givenchy.

“Yes, it was a British designer, but the gown was made in France.”

Mr Emmanuel continued: “I really do feel very strongly that if she’s married into the Royal Family she should be supporting British designers, quite frankly.

“There are lots of talented British designers who could have done it.”

British fashion retailer Lyst last month released a new report suggesting the fashion picks Meghan Markle has made since marrying into the Royal Family have generated a 216 percent average search increase compared to Kate Middleton’s 119 percent.

Meghan’s royal wardrobe has sparked a higher demand for white, beige and navy colours for Lyst’s search engine. In seven out of ten cases, the Duchess’s royal appearances led to an increase in pastel hues being searched online.

The surge in interest for Meghan’s fashion choices has marked a big change compared to her early days working as an actress in Los Angeles.

Makeup artist Daniel Martin, a close friend to the Duchess, revealed in May designers tended to snub the now-Royal because of her lack of A-list status.

Mr Martin said: “There were times when designers wouldn’t send her anything because she wasn’t an A-list actress or she wasn’t doing movies.

“Now, she’s considered a style icon, and the outfits sell out after she’s seen wearing them.

“She always had such an innate sense of her own style so I’m happy people can see that.”
