Meghan Markle ‘terrified’ by pressure to be ‘perfect mother’ ahead of royal baby

The Duchess of Sussex is preparing to give birth to her first baby in just a few weeks. But despite the help of professionals, her yoga sessions and the manuals about motherhood Meghan will have been guided by, she will likely feel unprepared and under an incredible amount of pressure as her due date approaches, according to relationship expert Sheela Mackintosh-Stewart. She told Express.co.uk: “Like most new mums, Meghan will be overjoyed but also terrified by the mammoth responsibility of raising a child.

“She may question if she is up to the task of motherhood and whether she’ll be able to maintain a sense of self and still take care of herself.”

The relationship expert explained that a part of the tensions Meghan will feel also come from the “pressure for perfection”, enhanced in the case of the Duchess by the fact that she is constantly under the eye of the media.

Mrs Mackintosh-Stewart said: “The reality is that there is no such thing as a perfect mum, despite best intention.

“Embracing this truth quickly can free her unrealistic expectations and anxieties and allow her to enjoy the wonderful experience of motherhood.

“Despite devouring all the baby books and attending pre-natal classes, the royal couple will discover like most parents that they are totally unprepared for the emotional and physical upheavals unleashed by their bundle of joy.”

Meghan’s baby is due in late April, according to a confession the Duchess herself made to a royal fan during an official visit to Birkenhead in Wirral, Merseyside.

While she may be worrying about perfections, other mums are pleading to Meghan not to hide the reality of pregnancy, giving birth and motherhood to respect other parents.

Chelsea Hirschhorn, CEO of parenting company Fridababy, urged Meghan to not pose for a picture outside the hospital just hours after giving birth, despite both Princess Diana and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, making the iconic photos a royal tradition.

She wrote in an open letter: “Dear Royal Mom-To-Be.

“You will soon give birth to one of the most anticipated babies in the world and like your princess predecessors, you’ll be expected to parade outside of the hospital in front of throngs of photographers to show off your new bundle of joy shortly after giving birth.

“You’ll smile, you’ll wave, you’ll be radiant, but between your legs will be a whole different story.

“Sure your blowout will be perfect for your hospital step photo-op, but people will be opening on all the wrong things – like how soon you will fit into your pre-baby wardrobe – instead of having an honest conversation about what women go through during birth and immediately after.

“But us mums will know that while you wave from that step you’ll be one pair of mesh underwear away from your first post-baby poop (brace yourself)!”

Meghan also received the support of another famous mum, tennis champion Serena Williams, who hosted her lavish baby shower in New York in February.

When asked by E News! to give her close friend some pieces of advice on motherhood, Mrs Williams said: “Accept mistakes and don’t expect to be perfect.

“This is a time where everything is not going to go as planned.

“You just have to go with the flow.”
