Meghan Markle takes last-minute commercial flight to watch Serena Williams in US Open

The Duchess of Sussex took a commercial flight this morning following the recent row over her and Prince Harry’s use of private jets. Meghan, who was not joined by Harry or baby Archie, will watch her close pal Serena in the US Open final before heading home to Frogmore Cottage.

A source told The Times: “It is a last-minute trip. Excited to support her friend, and then come back.”

US-born Meghan has reportedly been thinking about the trip across the pond since Serena won her quarter-final earlier this week and the royal stayed up last night for the semi-final, catching her flight hours later.

It comes after the Sussexes faced accusations of hypocrisy when it emerged they took four private jets in 11 days over the summer to holidays in Ibiza and Nice.

They travelled to Spain to celebrate Meghan’s 38th birthday in August before heading to Sir Elton John’s home in France.

Their decision to travel by private jet prompted a backlash as the eco-warriors regularly preach to the public on saving the planet.

Harry defended his use of exclusive planes on Tuesday as he travelled to Amsterdam to launch his new Travalyst project to make the tourism industry more environmentally friendly.

The royal insisted he spends “99 percent of my life travelling the world by commercial”.

He added: “Occasionally there needs to be an opportunity based on a unique circumstance to ensure that my family are safe – it’s generally as simple as that.”

Harry admitted that “no-one is perfect” but what is important is “what we do to balance” out negative effects.

The 34-year-old said: “Sometimes the scale of the conservation crisis feels overwhelming and that individual actions can’t make a difference.

“I’ve certainly felt that – but I’ve learned that we cannot dismiss the idea of trying to do something, just because we can’t do everything. We can all do better.

“And, while no-one is perfect, we are all responsible for our own individual impact; the question is what we do to balance it out.”

He also discussed what he was doing to reduce his carbon footprint.

Harry said: “I’ve always offset my CO2, I think part of the group discussion we had earlier was ‘What is offsetting CO2?’

“There are so many people out there that hear about it, don’t know about it. In my mind it’s the right thing to do and we need to make it cool, but it can’t just be a ticking-the-box exercise.

“Somehow we have to connect people to where that little bit of extra money is actually going and, the moment you have that connection, you feel you have a bigger purpose in life, and you can actually see the difference you’re making, and I think that’s acceptable.”

Meghan’s trip to New York is her first known visit since her lavish baby shower back in February.

And in July, the former actress watched tennis legend Serena play at Wimbledon.
