Meghan Markle ‘surprised’ to meet Suits super fan during South Africa visit

Meghan Markle, most widely known as the Duchess of Sussex after marrying into the royal family, was surprised when a member of the public recognised her as a member of the show Suits. The eager fans spot came while Meghan was visiting the home of a local resident.

During the visit at the home of Shamiela Sanioden, local residents enjoyed tea and food and the opportunity to speak with Meghan.

One woman took the opportunity to let Meghan know she is a big fan of the former actress’ role in the US legal drama.

Ms Sanioden told BAZAAR.com: “It was a very relaxed conversation, Harry and Meghan are very informal, which made it nice and easy for us in the house.

“It didn’t feel like having royalty in the house, they’re very down to earth, they were so lovely.”

She continued: “One of the ladies told Meghan they had been watching her on her TV show Suits and she was surprised to hear about that. She said she was happy that they enjoyed it.”

The surprise greeting came amid Harry and Meghan’s ten day long tour of South Africa.

The couple landed in the African nation on last week and will head back to the UK on Wednesday October 2.

Yesterday, the Duke and Duchess stopped off in the Bo-Kaap area of Cape Town to celebrate heritage day with local residents.

The day recognises the cultural wealth of the country, marking the day with traditional dress, eating traditional foods, attending performances and sharing oral histories.

As well as marking heritage day, Meghan made a surprise personal visit to a memorial of a South African student who was raped and murdered.

Buckingham Palace said it was a “personal gesture” Meghan wanted to make ahead of several other visits she was set to make.

Meghan wrote a touching message on a yellow ribbon, placing the bright piece of cloth on the memorial as a tribute to the tragic incident.

The Duchess is said to have “personally followed the tragic story” according to Buckingham Palace, and was horrified by details of how the murder panned out.

The visit saw Meghan visit the post office where the 19-year-old University of Cape Town student, Uyinene Mrwetyana, was raped and murdered last month.

The aftermath of the crime saw huge outrage as concerns over crime in the country were reignited, highlighting the issue of violence against South African women.

Meghan wrote on a yellow ribbon left at the scene in the local language Xhosa: “We stand together in this situation. Harry and Meghan September 26, 2019”, according to images taken by The Sun’s royal correspondent Emily Andrews.

It joined dozens of coloured ribbons which were left in tribute to the popular teenager, known as Nene.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that earlier this week The Duchess made a private visit to the memorial of Uyinene Mrwetyana.

“Having closely followed the tragic story, it was a personal gesture she wanted to make.”

Uyinene ‘Nene’ Mrwetyana, 19, was bludgeoned to death with a post office scale in Claremont, it is claimed, after she was allegedly lured inside by an employee.

The student had gone to collect a parcel from the post office but a worker there had told her to come back later.

On her returning she allegedly found the post office worker alone.

A 42-year-old male post office employee has been arrested over the killing.
