Meghan Markle struggle: Archbishop of Canterbury ‘immensely concerned’ over abuse

Meghan is “remarkable person”, according to the man who conducted her fairytale wedding ceremony with Prince Harry. Archbishop Welby took the side of the Duchess of Sussex when asked about the criticism Meghan has received in the past months.

He told Emma Barnett on BBC Radio 5: “She’s a person of profound humanity and deep concern for people, seeking to carry out her role with every ounce of her being, and I think she’s a remarkable person.”

The Archbishop was also asked whether the remarks and criticism from members of the public and against Meghan had a “racist flavour”.

Archbishop Welby replied: “I would be obviously be immensely concerned about all racist behaviour.

“Particularly when it is someone you know, you just think this is so totally undeserved.”

During the same interview, the senior bishop compared being a member of the Royal Family to a “life sentence”.

He said: “They (the royal family) are born into it and one of the things, with the great privilege of meeting some of them, that I’m most aware of is their sheer sense of duty and commitment, which means they know this is a life sentence.

“Even if they decided to withdraw from public life and never take any money and disappear, they would still be pursued because they’d be the ex-you know Duke of Rock or whatever.

“It is genuinely a life sentence.”

This isn’t the first time the Archbishop of Canterbury spoke out in favour of Harry and Meghan.

In an interview to The Sunday Times in late October, the senior bishop said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex “deserve a break”.

He said: “All members of the Royal Family are under a pressure that none of us outside it can possibly imagine.

“Every personal action is scrutinised.

“Every statement is over-interpreted, over-read.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are going to take a couple of months away from royal duties.

“If you look at it as a job, they didn’t take the full allowance of leave that you’re entitled to; every person is entitled to.

“I don’t know why it should be a point of criticism that they take leave to spend time with a new baby in the way that the law provides for every single employee in this country.”

The Archbishop also dismissed as “absurd” claims Meghan and Harry, as members of the Royal Family, should be setting a higher moral example.

He said: “They’re not superhuman.

“They’re a very remarkable group of people, all of them. But you can’t lay that kind of extra burden on people.”

Meghan and Harry are currently on a six-week break, which has seen them spending Thanksgiving with the Duchess’ mother Doria Ragland.

The pair, who became parents more than six months ago, will also spend this Christmas with Doria instead of other senior royals and the Queen.

A spokesperson for the Sussexes said: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are looking forward to extended family time towards the end of this month.

“Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, [the couple] will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the Duchess’ mother Doria.

“This decision is in line with precedent set previously by other members of the Royal Family, and has the support of Her Majesty The Queen.”
