Meghan Markle social media blackout: Shock move Duchess forced into to bolster presence

The Duchess of Sussex was once an avid user of social media, regularly posting updates on her Instagram account, while maintaining her own fashion and beauty website. Ahead of becoming a member of the Royal Family, Meghan opted to close down The Tig, but still old archive posts from the site regularly re-emerge on social media. But in a bombshell move last year in September, Meghan was talked into keeping the rights to the name of her blog until at least 2021 by manager Andrew Meyer.

The move sparked wild speculation that Meghan could be about to reopen the account and begin posting, in what would have been an unprecedented move from a senior member of the Royal Family.

According to The Sun, the application was filed in the US to keep the company name ‘Frim Fram’ and also a website called ‘Tigtots’.

A royal source at the time said: “It’s fascinating Meghan’s business manager has ensured she keeps The Tig for a few more years at least.

“Of course it’s understandable she wouldn’t want an entrepreneur using the name without her involvement.

“But given her desire to be a different type of royal — pushing her own causes using digital and social media — it’s not out of the question she’d think The Tig could play an important role.”

The website was originally launched in 2014, when Meghan was at the height of her acting powers, appearing as a cast regular in the TV favourite ‘Suits’.

It was kept open for around three years, and was described as being “a hub for the discerning palate — those with a hunger for food, travel, fashion and beauty”.

As a result of the move, a royal spokeswoman said: “The lasting trademark is to prevent false branding, to avoid others purporting to be the Duchess or affiliated with her.”

Just months later, commentators believed Meghan was set to make her “Instagram comeback”, after she had shut down her accounts following her marriage to Prince Harry the previous year.

At the time, reports said Meghan had been operating under a secret “fake” account, attempting to interact with her friends and post privately.

But, due to social media trolls, Meghan was forced to close these down, in a move which left the Duchess “isolated”.

The Sun reported at the time that a royal source said: “Since she shut down her public Instagram, she’d had a fake account to follow her friends.

“There was some really vile stuff written by social media trolls and obviously she also saw the headlines about her.

“It really got to her and, in the end, she had to shut down that account just before Christmas, too, to protect her mental health.

“She felt very isolated and alone.”
