Meghan Markle revelation: The one thing Duchess may not have done if Diana had been alive

Former press secretary to Charles and Diana, Dickie Arbiter, told the Daily Mail he believes Diana could have offered advice to the Duchess of Sussex. He said the Princess of Wales might have advised Meghan against her lavish baby shower in New York in February – or at least persuaded her to get a commercial flight. Mr Arbiter argued this would be better optics for the Royal Family and the Duchess.

He said: “Meghan’s baby shower probably wasn’t the right thing to do as far as presentation is concerned, so Diana might have been able to talk to Meghan about that.

“When Meghan went over to New York for it, it would have been better if she’d got on a British Airways flight as a normal passenger rather than a private jet.

“It smacks of being over the top.”

Meghan attracted much criticism for her decision to fly by private jet to the US for a five-day break to celebrate with her close friends.

The Duchess of Sussex’s flight allegedly cost £172,600, paid for by her friend Amal Clooney.

The thirteen-hour round trip would have cost £13,277 per hour.

Critics have pointed out that this luxury is over the top and also has a bad impact on the environment, while her husband Prince Harry campaigns on the topic.

A baby shower is a much-loved American tradition in which female friends celebrate an upcoming birth by bringing gifts for the baby.

However, some accused Meghan of breaking protocol, as baby showers are not a British tradition.

Royal expert Victoria Arbiter said: “There’s the added pressure that they are clearly very wealthy and a lavish baby shower would be seen as highly inappropriate.

“There’s nothing they can’t go out and buy themselves.”

Meghan and her 15 friends celebrated in The Mark Hotel, a glitzy hotel on the Upper East Side.

The party was reportedly arranged by Meghan’s best friend, stylist Jessica Mulroney.

A source told Tatler the baby shower happened in the penthouse suite of the hotel, priced at $75,000 a night.

Princess Diana was often criticised by the media for how she acted and would likely have a few tips for Meghan on how to cope as well as how to present herself.

Mr Arbiter suggested Diana could have advised Meghan on humanitarian issues in the UK as well.

He said: “Diana would have advised Meghan in humanitarian issues in the United Kingdom and in which direction to go.

“She would have been very good at that, at advising Meghan on charities she might consider working with.

“There are considerable issues and problems in the UK and before you start dashing off around the world, you need to think about the UK first.”
