Meghan Markle revelation: How one moment changed how Duchess interacts with fans
Meghan was just 13 when she met the star she bases her fan interactions off. She was working at a frozen yoghurt shop in Los Angeles called Humphrey Yogart, earning $4/hour (£3/hour). One day, she spotted Yasmine Bleeth – one of the stars of Baywatch – in the car park of the shop.
The teenager summoned up her courage to approach the actress and said: “On my God, I loved you in that Soft & Dri commercial.”
She said Ms Bleeth “looked at me and said, ‘Okay, thank you!’”.
The Baywatch actress smiled and asked Meghan her name and shook her hand.
Meghan said years later: “That moment with Yasmine is exactly what I based every interaction with fans on.”
Meghan went on to be a successful Hollywood actress, making her big break in the TV show Suits, which she was in for seven years.
After marrying Prince Harry, she now has a whole new array of fans – those interested in the Royal Family.
The royals are known for their ‘walkabouts’ – essentially a meet and greet where members of the Royal Family meet and shake hands with fans.
It seems Meghan probably channels her positive experience with Ms Bleeth during these events.
The owner of Humphrey Yogart Paula Sheftel told the Daily Mirror in 2017 that Meghan was a hard worker in the shop.
She said: “Meghan was still in school – maybe a little older than 13 as the rules are strict in California.
“She earned minimum wage and was very popular with the customers.
”She had to prove she had an outgoing personality and would work well with staff.”
Ms Sheftel was impressed by how Meghan handled long queues.
She said: “A lot of the kids can’t handle the pressure.
“It takes a special personality for someone that young to deal with it. Meghan had that early on.
“The high schoolers work 10 to 12 hours a week, after school each day and on weekends.
“We trained her to be personable and be very genuine – skills she’s going to need travelling the world with Harry.”
Meghan’s former boss added that she was “excited” for the engagement.
Meghan went on to marry Prince Harry in May 2018 and gave birth to their first child, Archie Harrison, last month.
