Meghan Markle revelation: How ‘a star was born’ in shock performance

She was in high school at the time, and played South American vampire Lola Banana in the 1955 musical comedy Damn Yankees. Her performance, particularly her Burlesque song-and-dance routine “brought the house down”. Royal biographer Andrew Morton spoke to Meghan’s former theology teacher Maria Pollia for his 2018 book ‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’.

He wrote: “As Ms Pollia recalls, [Meghan] had appeared in many productions and she was always good, but this time she was a star.

“And that night, a star was born.”

The show was staged by the all-boys Catholic school Loyola High School in Downtown LA.

The story is based on a modern retelling of the Faustian Pact in which Meghan’s character Lola makes a deal with the devil and tries to seduce baseball star player Joe Hardy.

Meghan – dressed in long satin gloves and a sequin leotard – shimmied across the stage in what was an “eye-opening” moment for friends and teachers watching.

Mr Morton wrote: “Normally seen as fun, but thoughtful, mature and controlled, Meghan’s amorous song and dance routine was a revelation.”

One member of the audience said: “It was like ‘Wooo!’ She was extraordinary!

“I remember sitting there thinking, ‘Oh my goodness, this is an Immaculate Heart girl!’

“She was wearing the little spangly number, doing the shimmies, the whole bit.

“It wasn’t lewd, she was playing a character. It was sweet in a way, but it was also like wow. This was a girl with star quality.”

Mr Morton compared this moment to when Kate Middleton starred in the Don’t Walk fashion show at the University of St Andrews

When Prince William watched her walk down the catwalk in a see-through dress over a black bikini he turned to his friend and said: “Wow, Kate’s hot!”

This was apparently a turning point in the prince’s relationship with his future wife.

For Meghan, her involvement in the play at Loyola High School also garnered some interest from boys.

She attended her 1999 school prom with a boy from the school called Giancarlo Boccato.

John Dlugolecki, who was a photographer at the event, said they were “a star couple”.

Meghan also dated “several boys” from another all-boys Catholic school St Francis during her high school years.

Her first long-term boyfriend was Luis Segura, who she ended up seeing for nearly two years.

It was Luis’ sister Maria who set them up on their first date and Meghan got to know the rest of his family well.

She even went to prom with his sister Danny, who she had performed with in a production of ‘Oedipus Rex’ at the school.
