Meghan Markle reveals the women she most admires as she’s given honour of editing Vogue
The September Issue of British Vogue is being guest edited by Meghan Markle, and will feature causes close to Meghan’s heart, such as race, female empowerment and mental health. The appointment has been a closely guarded secret with the project being discussed only at clandestine meetings and in emails exchanged between Vogue’s offices in the West End and Meghan’s Windsor home. Meghan has chosen to feature a series of women she admires within the bumper issue, highlighting female change makers who are set to reshape society in radically positive ways.
Meghan, alongside the magazine’s editorial team, have chosen women from the frontline of fashion, film, technology, wellness and beyond to feature in the issue, calling it ‘Forces for Change’.
Some of the women featured in the editor include: Jacinda Ardern, prime minister of New Zealand, Francesca Hayward, royal ballet principal dancer, and Greta Thunberg, climate change campaigner and student.
Other noteworthy women chosen for the issue are: Jameela Jamil, body positivity advocate and actor, Ramla Ali, a boxer, and Christy Burlington Burns, founder of Every Mother Counts.
Together, these women feature on the cover, as Meghan has opted out of a cover page photo.
Greta Thunberg, who is only 16-years-old came to prominence last year when she began protesting outside the Swedish Parliament about the need for immediate action to combat climate change.
In March, an estimated 1.4million students in 112 countries around the world joined the schoolgirls’ call in striking and protesting to draw attention to the issue that is close to her heart.
She continued to gain international attention after speaking at the United Nations Climate Talks in Poland last December, and has since been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Jacinda Arden is the world’s youngest female head of government, having taken office at the age of 37.
Not only that, but the New Zealand political became the world’s second elected head of government to give birth while in office, when her daughter was born on June 21 last year.
She has been widely described as one of the most powerful women in the world and has been credited with improving New Zealand’s global ratings of approval.
Ramla Ali is also featured in the September issue, owing to her successful boxing career.
The Somali boxer, based in London, is the current African Zone Featherweight Champion, weighing in at just 57kg.
Ms Ali was born in Mogadishu, the capital of Somali and when she was young her parents fled the country and became British refugees.
Years later, she took up boxing and quickly took to the sport, progressing to international level.
Meghan Markle broke the news on her SussexRoyal Instagram account, and said: “Guest Editing the September issue of British Vogue has been rewarding, educational and inspiring.
“To deep dive into this process, working quietly behind the scenes for so many months, I am happy to now be able to share what we have created.
“A huge thanks to all of the friends who supported me in this endeavour, lending their time and energy to help within these pages and on the cover.
“Thank you for saying “Yes!” – and to Edward, thank you for this wonderful opportunity.”
Edward Enninful, editor-in-chief of British Vogue was delighted Meghan accepted the appointment.
The full feature of the September issue of British Vogue will be available on newsstands and digital download on Friday August 2.
