Meghan Markle reveals joy of her new royal life ‘it’s a very special time for me’

Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, candidly spoke about her feelings and her current state of mind in the guest editor’s letter of the September issue of British Vogue. She wrote: “It’s a very special time for me personally, on so many levels; working with Edward and his team, both during my pregnancy and my maternity leave, has played no small part in that joy – it has been a privilege to be welcomed and supported by this amazing team.” Meghan doesn’t mention what is making these months so special to her – but it is safe to assume she may be speaking about the birth of her son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, and her first wedding anniversary to Prince Harry.

Both these events fell while Duchess was working on the British Vogue’s September issue – respectively on May 6 and May 19.

Meghan also highlighted how her collaboration to Edward Enninful, the editor-in-chief of British Vogue, happened before she entered her pregnancy’s third semester and continued after her son Archie was already marking important milestones, such as his christening.

As she started working at the September issue of British Vogue in January, when she was five-month pregnant, this unique collaboration to one of the UK’s most important fashion magazines has accompanied her through half of her pregnancy.

She said: “I was about five months pregnant when this process began, and by the time you hold this issue in your hands, my husband and I will be holding our three-month-old baby boy in ours.”

Meghan, who in her letter thanked Mr Enninful for taking “a chance” on her, also revealed how her guest-editor role wasn’t at all offered to her in the first place, as she was the one who asked for it.

The idea of becoming guest editor for a month stemmed the first meeting between Mr Enninful and Meghan, focused on how the magazine could help cast a light on Smart Works – one of the Duchess’ four patronages.

But, as Meghan said, the conversation quickly evolved into how to “shine light in a world filled with seemingly daily darkness”.

Meghan said: “Within hours of our meeting’s end, we were already texting one another – philosophising about how to communicate this shared understanding and the lens through which we see the world, how to pivot from a perspective of frustration to one of optimism.

“So I asked the question. Actually, I typed and deleted the question several times until I built up the courage to ask the question in question.

“‘Edward… instead of doing the cover, would you be open to me guest editing your September issue?’

“(Mind you, I know how important the September issue is for the fashion industry.

“I realise the reach, and I see the opportunity to be a part of fashion’s push for something greater, kinder, more impactful.

“But I am also a little nervous to be boldly asking the editor-in-chief, whom I’ve only just met, to take a chance on me.)”

Mr Enninful immediately said yes to Meghan’s proposal, welcoming her as “the country’s most influential beacon of change” in his own editor’s letter.

There, the editor praised Meghan and her union to Prince Harry as something “incredibly powerful”.

He added: “It went beyond diversity, beyond inclusivity, into humanity. It was pure love.”
