A royal expert has thrown doubt over future plans for Meghan Markle to return to the UK, claiming that a joint appearance with the Royal Family would look “a little hypocritical” given the events of the last year. Whilst it is unknown if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will return for the Platinum Jubilee in 2022, Robert Jobson said the couple risk detracting attention from the Queen, as royal fans analyse and the media would focus on analysing whether Meghan is “happy or not”.

Speaking on the Royally Us podcast, royal expert Robert Jobson said: “I’m not sure Meghan will ever come to Britain again, she’s not popular here now.

“The idea of her standing next to the Queen, doting on the Queen, when you’ve got a book coming out in which you’re going to spill more dirty linen in public does seem a little hypocritical.

“We’ll have to wait and see. I’m sure Harry thinks he’ll be there for the 70th – the Platinum Jubilee.

“But you’ve got to remember that within months he’s going to have a book coming out.”

According to the latest YouGov polls, Meghan Markle is ranked the 13th most popular royal, with an approval rating of only 32 percent in the UK.

A poll released on September 3 showed Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s popularity suffered a significant 9-point drop from 43 percent to 34 percent.

The same survey showed the Duchess’s public rating had also dropped from 31 percent in March to 26 percent in September.

With regards to the Queen’s upcoming Platinum Jubilee, Robert Jobson said the couple risk stealing the attention from Her Majesty.

He explained: “The focus should not be on whether Meghan’s happy or not, or whether Harry’s looking the wrong way at his brother.

“And that’s exactly what will be the case, and that would be wrong in my opinion because the Queen deserves more than that.”

The Platinum Jubilee is due to take place over a four-day Bank Holiday between the 2nd-5th of June next year, with the Royal Family participating in a number of the festivities to celebrate the Queen’s seven decades on the throne.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced in January 2020 that they would be stepping down from the Royal Family, and would be relocating to North America.

The statement reportedly took several members of the family by surprise and led to a series of meetings to negotiate a way for the couple to become financially independent.

Since then, the Sussexes have settled in California, and have signed a number of lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify, as well as establishing their own non-profit organisation.

In March of this year, the couple conducted an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, where they detailed their rift with Buckingham Palace and spoke negatively of their experience within the Royal Family.

Allegations included Palace aides refusing to intervene with damaging tabloid articles, the family ignoring the couple’s mental health, and a senior member of the Royal Family making a racist remark.

Prince Harry also spoke of his rift with Prince Charles and Prince William, saying he felt “really let down” by his father.

The interview caused a PR crisis for Buckingham Palace, and led to the Queen releasing a statement to say that whilst “recollections may vary”, the couple remained “much-loved” members of the family.

Since then, the Duke of Sussex has continued to speak publicly about his family, and despite reuniting publicly on two occasions, reconciliatory talks have reportedly been unproductive.

In July, it was also announced that Prince Harry would be releasing an “accurate and wholly truthful” account of his life.

The memoir, which will be published through Penguin Random House, is expected to cover the Duke’s childhood, army career, and his life within the Royal Family. With a publication date in late 2022, the announcement has sparked concerns that the Duke will spill more family secrets shortly after the Queen’s celebratory Jubilee.
