Meghan reached out to the students of Robert Clack School in Dagenham one year after she visited them to mark International Women’s Day and the reopening of schools in the UK. In her letter, the Duchess of Sussex recalled the topics she discussed with the students one year ago and their meeting with Geraldine Dear, a leading figure in the fight for equal pay rights.
But she also mentioned Archewell, the organisation founded by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and its initiative focused on acts of kindness and compassion to be carried out to mark International Women’s Day.
In the letter, dated March 8 2021, Meghan wrote: “It was this time a year ago that I had the pleasure of meeting so many of you during my visit to celebrate International Women’s Day and mark the 50th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act.
“I look back on that day with such fond memories and think of you all frequently, especially recognising how difficult it’s been for students and families during the past year.
“This International Women’s Day, in collaboration with the work of our non-profit organisation, Archewell Foundation, we are encouraging everybody to participate in real acts of compassion for the women in their lives and their community.
“One suggestion we have is to take a moment to learn about the trailblazing women who came before us.
“I’ve spent time recently thinking about Geraldine Dear, who joined us last year and is such an inspiration to all of us.”
Meghan went on thanking the “kindness” shown her by students and staff during her face-to-face visit.
She also recalled “memories you gave me that I still hold and cherish. Even the light-hearted ones”.
Meghan here referred to a comment made by pupil Aker Okoye, who went on stage to discuss what International Women’s Day meant for him but also delivered a cheeky comment on the Duchess, which left her in stitches.
Before speaking about the importance of the Day, he told the school: “She really is beautiful, innit?”
Meghan ended her letter expressing her happiness at the reopening of schools in the UK after an “incredibly challenging” year of homeschooling.
The royal, who signed off her letter with “Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex”, added a sweet post scriptum note, reading: “I still have the Debate Society team jacket you gave me with me here in California and wear it often. Thank you again for thinking of me!”
The letter did not present the royal monogram but had Archewell’s logo on its letterhead.
Meghan and Harry officially stepped down as senior royals just weeks after the Duchess visited Robert Clack School.
The pair have since become financially independent from the Firm, bought a new home in Montecito and launched their organisation Archewell.
Archewell comprehends their non-for-profit Foundation as well as production companies Archewell Audio and Archewell Productions, with which they are to create audio and video content exclusively for Spotify and Netflix.
Meghan’s letter comes after Meghan and Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey aired on CBS on Sunday 7 March.
During the two-hour-long chat, the couple opened up about their relationship with other royals and with the institution of monarchy.
While sparing the Queen and Prince Philip from criticism, the Duke of Sussex said at the moment his relationship with Prince William is one “of space” and that he feels “let down” by his father Prince Charles.
Meghan hit back at claims she made Kate cry in the run-up to her wedding, telling Oprah it had actually been the other way round – but the Duchess of Cambridge had already apologised to her.
She also made the extraordinary claim she had sought help with the palace’s HR when feeling suicidal but was told they could do nothing to support her.
And claimed an unnamed member of the Royal Family had raised “concerns” over “how dark” the skin of Archie would be while she was still pregnant with him.
During the interview, however, Meghan and Harry also shared the happy news they are expecting a baby girl.
Speaking about the news, Prince Harry said: “To have a boy and a girl, what more could you ask for? Now we have our family, the four of us and our two dogs.”
