Meghan Markle receives touching advice from Helena Bonham Carter on negative publicity

The Oscar-nominated actress, who portrays Princess Margaret in the hit Netflix series The Crown, offered up some advice to Meghan Markle about media scrutiny. Appearing on US talk show Watch What Happens Live (WWHL) Bonham Carter was asked by a caller for her thoughts on the negative press surrounding the Duchess. The actress immediately offered up some touching advice to the young royal and told Meghan to not put her self esteem “in the hands of strangers”.

Bonham Carter said: “I don’t pay attention to it [negative media coverage] and I wish she wouldn’t have to.

“I feel like there’s just so much. It’s just all too much.

“It must be really hard for her not to, but all I’d say to her is, as soon as you become well known and in the public domain you have to kind of accept that… all that people think of you and write about you, and whatever, that’s about them and it’s not really about her.

“Why let the stranger? That was the most important or useful thing that somebody told me, is putting your self-esteem in the hands of strangers.”

The British actress said it was the same with her portrayal of Princess Margaret, which aired earlier this month.

She said: “It’s really interesting playing her.

“So many people keep on giving me an opinion about every single part of the role. You didn’t meet them.

“Everyone feels like they’re an authority and, of course, unless you’ve met the person don’t even voice an opinion.”

While on the talkshow, host Andy Cohen asked what happened when Bonham Carter asked Prince William to be the godfather of her 11-year-old daughter Nell – something she revealed to People magazine in May 2014.

Mr Cohen asked: “You drunkenly asked Prince William to be the child’s godmother? What happened?”

The actress responded: “I wasn’t that drunk. Enough drunk to …not to drink anymore.

“He wasn’t totally sober himself. Not in a bad way, it was just one big jolly.”

Bonham Carter explained that she asked William to be Nell’s godfather, after she asked nearly a dozen of her friends to be a godparent to her firstborn, son Billy.

Billy, who is now 16, has 11 godparents.

She told the talkshow host that by securing British royalty as her daughter’s godfather, “that would cover it”.

But the Duke declined the offer, as Bonham Carter recalled: “He just said, ‘You don’t want me to be godfather to your child’.

“And I left and obviously it didn’t work out. Funny enough.”

Season three of The Crown aired on November 17 and saw the entire cast replaced, to mark the passage of time.

Olivia Colman took over from Claire Foy as the Queen, while Tobias Menzies portrayed Prince Philip, who was previously played by Matt Smith.
