Meghan Markle made her most direct intervention in US politics yet this week after calling for paid family leave. The Duchess of Sussex wrote an open letter to top Democrats lobbying them not to “compromise” on paid family leave. This comes as Democrats are involved in heated negotiations on priorities in a budget reconciliation bill.

The Duchess won support for the move, with the Mail on Sunday’s Charlotte Griffith saying she’s right to throw her weight behind the cause.

She said that the Duchess was “meddling” but that the cause was “really important”.

Ms Griffith told Mail+: “She wrote her first political letter at the age of eight, remember, so this is another version of that but ten times longer and more important.

“And I think it is actually a really important issue, so Meghan’s meddling is, in this case, a really good thing.”

She added: “It is a cause that is universally backed. I’m all for it.”

Diary Editor Richard Eden said: “Mark my words, this is the start of a political career for the Duchess of Sussex. I’m sure the route will begin from here.

“There is a seamless path between lobbying and the political world.”

Meghan also won supporters from prominent US political leaders, including the former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Harry and Meghan: Expert's swipe over royal duties

Ms Clinton tweeted, “Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex makes a compelling case for paid leave in a letter to Congress.”

Progressive California Representative Eric Swalwell tweeted the letter and urged followers to read it.

In the letter, the Duchess admitted she had felt “overwhelmed” by the arrival of her daughter, Lilibet, in June.

Although the Duke and Duchess of Sussex letterhead was used, Meghan said that she wanted to write “as a mom” to advocate paid leave.

She wrote: “Paid leave should be a national right, rather than a patchwork option limited to those whose employers have policies in place, or those who live in one of the few states where a leave program exists.

“If we’re going to create a new era of family first policies, let’s make sure that includes a strong paid leave program for every American that’s guaranteed, accessible, and encouraged without stigma or penalty.”

It remains unclear whether Meghan’s intervention will succeed, as President Biden is understood to be considering slashing a national paid family leave program from twelve weeks to four.

However, the intervention did not come without controversy among Republican officials.

Republican Representative Jason Smith, told DailyMail.com: “Ms. Markle’s latest interference in U.S. politics reignites the question in my mind as to why the Royal Family does not simply strip her and Harry officially of their titles, particularly since she insists on sending this under the pretense of being the Duchess of Sussex.”

Representative Lisa McClain echoed this: “The last thing we need right now is wealthy celebrities pushing their liberal agendas on the American people.”
