Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have settled in the US now and established a home in Los Angeles. The Duchess of Sussex’ home city has allowed them to flourish independently of the royals, and they have made several addresses about matters close to their hearts. But they still have duties back in the UK, and these include commitments to various patronages.

Although the Duke and Duchess of Sussex intended to settle in the US, they did not indicate a desire to leave the UK behind.

The COVID-19 pandemic has effectively quarantined them across the pond, with no recourse to return while authorities bar travel in or out of the country.

The royals will likely want to return to Prince Harry’s home, and they have commitments to compel a visit.

Soaking to Royal Central, Finding Freedom author Omid Scobie said they would eventually make more regular trips back to Britain.

He said they would do so “both privately and professionally” when US authorities lifted restrictions.

Mr Scobie added: “Harry and Meghan have made it clear that their work in the UK, including their royal patronages, will continue.

“While their base will be in the US, I think once travel restrictions ease we will see them moving around again and undertaking trips to the UK, both privately and professionally.

“After all, this is a couple that loves to get out there and be active in the field.”

“Plus, a lot of the work they already started, including all four of Meghan’s patronages, are right here on British soil.”

The biographer added future trips would end up just that, however, with no prospect of a permanent return.

He said the couple had established a “permanent family base in California”.

He added: “The UK will always be important to them, but I don’t think we’ll ever see that happen again as working royals.”

When they negotiated their exit from the Royal Family, they agreed to undertake a trial period of separation.

The agreement, which was allegedly suggested by royal aides, stipulates the couple has until later this year to decide whether they will remain stateside.

They announced the plan via their website, which stated: “It is agreed that the commencement of the revised role of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will take effect Spring 2020 and undergo a 12-month review.”

While they are unlikely to return to the fold, the trial period gives them time to alter the terms of their arrangement.

A source close to the couple hinted they could take on different roles for the Royal Family in the future.

They told the Daily Mail: “Do I rule out them taking on roles for the family in the future? Absolutely not.”

“But a full-scale return soon is not likely. That is not down to animosity or anything like that.

“They have not yet reached what they were seeking to do.”
