Meghan Markle news: Piers Morgan brands MPs’ show of solidarity to Meghan ‘very dangerous’

Meghan Markle,38, and Prince Harry ,35, will take a six-week break from royal duty next month following revelations they are struggling in the spotlight. An explosive ITV documentary made during their time in Africa contained candid interviews with the couple in which they both admitted the past year had been tough.

Among the revelations was Meghan’s claim she had been naive about the level of press attention she would get as Prince Harry’s wife.

Speaking to journalist Tom Bradby, she said: “It’s hard.

“I don’t think anybody could understand that.”

“In all fairness I had no idea, which probably sounds difficult to understand and hear,”

“But when I first met my now-husband, my friends were really happy because I was so happy but my British friends said to me, ‘I’m sure he’s great but you shouldn’t do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life.’

“And I very naively — I’m American.

“We don’t have that there — [I said], ‘What are you talking about? That doesn’t make any sense.

I’m not in any tabloids,’” said the duchess. “I didn’t get it. So it’s been, yeah, it’s been complicated.”

In response to Meghan’s heartfelt admission, a group of female MPs from across the House of Commons penned her an open letter expressing their solidarity with the Duchess.

The letter which was organised by Holly Lynch and was signed by 72 MPs and saw them support her in “taking a stand against the often distasteful and misleading nature” of some newspaper stories about her.

The letter continued: “Even more concerning still, we are calling out what can only be described as outdated, colonial undertones to some of these stories.”

The MPs added these types of stories could not “be allowed to go unchallenged.”

They said they shared “an understanding of the abuse and intimidation” used against women in public-facing positions.

While the well-meaning letter has been praised by some, former newspaper editor and fierce Meghan critic Piers Morgan took a strong stance against it.

The broadcaster issued an acerbic response on Twitter following the letter’s publication.

He branded the move “a very dangerous attempt to suppress freedom of the press.”

Mr Morgan tweeted: “WOW. Female MPs accuse press of being racist towards Meghan Markle.

“I hope they can justify that extraordinary claim, and that they urgently clarify which stories they think are unfairly intrusive?

“This looks like a very dangerous attempt to suppress freedom of the press.”

Fans of the Sussexes have previously accused Mr Morgan of waging a harsh and unrelenting campaign against the royal couple.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will travel to the US with baby Archie for the first time in November.

During their six week holiday, the Sussexes are expected to spend Thanksgiving with Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland.

The trip comes amid mounting speculation the Sussexes could move away from Britain long-term.

One royal commentator has claimed Meghan and Harry should use their time in America to reflect on the “disastrous” documentary, so they do not repeat the same PR mistake in future.

Mr FItzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “The Sussexes are taking six weeks off in November and should use it to plan a clear strategy for the future.

“If they were listening to their advisers about the way that disastrous documentary was made, they should change them.

“They absolutely cannot afford the type of interviews, in which they seemed so pressurised, they gave in it to recur.”
