The Duchess of Sussex discussed the Dragon Lady trope with comedian Margaret Cho and broadcaster Lisa Ling in the first episode of her podcast series published since the death of Queen Elizabeth II. At the end of the programme, Meghan featured a brief and unexpected appearance of Ms Ling’s adorable nine-year-old daughter, Jett Ling Song.

Meghan introduced the special guest saying: “As you know, we also had Lisa Ling on the show today.

“But what you didn’t know is that we had a surprise guest popping in, Lisa’s nine-year-old daughter Jett, who had been staying in the control room as we recorded, and came in right at the end to make a little cameo.”

The child got to ask her mother a question – which left the Duchess delighted.

Meghan could be heard saying during a relaxed moment recorded for the podcast: “Jett has a question! Do you want to come and sit here? Do you have a question I should ask your mum?”

The child said: “Why don’t you let me have a puppy?”

Ms Ling provided an appeasing reply for her daughter, saying: “She can at some point, we have a lot of people in our home.”

The Duchess, who is known to love dogs and currently shares three rescue pets with Prince Harry and their two young children Archie Harrison and Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana, asked Jett: “What would you name your dog when you get it, what do you want to name it?”

After the child replied “Cookie”, Meghan said: “That’s a great name, that’s awesome.”

As the programme was coming to a close, the Duchess added she asked Ms Ling to describe herself with three words – as she does to every main guest taking part in her podcast.

Meghan said: “By the way, I asked Lisa her three words as well, which included sponge-like, curious and conscious.

“But I also took a moment to ask Jett, her nine-year-old daughter, the three words she would use to describe herself.

“And it stayed with me, because true to form as any cool and precocious nine-year-old would do, she said the unexpected.

“She said one of the words she would use to describe herself was ‘weird’.

“She actually said weird twice, and I loved it, because she gets to, as we all get to, define ourselves as we see fit.

“Do you want to be weird, or be sponge-like, be silly, or fierce, be curious or even self-doubting or unsure some days and strong and brave on others, whatever it is – that’s up to you.

“Just be yourself, no matter what any societal frameworks or archetype or loud voices coming from a small place tells you.”

Meghan’s podcast series, produced exclusively for Spotify as part of a deal announced in late 2020 by the Sussexes, was temporarily paused as a sign of respect towards the Queen following her death.

Prior to the episode released today, titled The Demystification of Dragon Lady, Archetypes featured as guests tennis champion Serena Williams, songwriter Mariah Carey and actor and writer Mindy Kaling.

With them, Meghan discussed some typecasts and words often used to hold women back, such as ambition and diva.

In her fourth episode, Meghan also shared an insight into growing up in Los Angeles, saying she was exposed to a wide range of food, languages and cultures, including the Asian one.

And she recalled going to a Korean spa with her mother when she was a teenager, describing it as a “very humbling experience”.

She said: “Now, for those of you who haven’t been before, it’s a very humbling experience for a girl going through puberty.

“Because you enter a room with women from age nine to maybe 90, all walking around naked and waiting to get a body scrub on one of these tables that are all lined up in a row.

“All I wanted was a bathing suit! But you are not allowed, by the way.

“And once I was over that adolescent embarrassment my mum and I would go upstairs, sit in a room and we would have a steaming bowl of the most delicious noodles.”
