The keepsake is associated with the vows that they choose to honour on the day of their private ceremony. The couple wished to celebrate their voes to each other in a more intimate way before their more formal exchange, which happened before an audience of millions. In the days leading up to their royal wedding at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on May 19, 2018, they held an intimate backyard ceremony.

This private ceremony was attended by just themselves.

Meghan Markle told Oprah Winfrey about it during the controversial interview on US television earlier this month, which was later aired on ITV.

Meghan said: “Three days before our wedding, we got married.

“No one knows that, but we called the Archbishop and said, ‘This thing, this spectacle is for the world, but we want our union between us'”.

Now, to enshrine this ceremony in their joint memories, the couple has chosen to display a special keepsake in their room at their Montecito home in California.

The Duchess of Sussex told Oprah: “So the vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury.”

The couple’s formal ceremony was held at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor, days after the private ceremony.

It was then that they officially became husband and wife, on the world stage.

Having the private ceremony beforehand allowed Meghan to approach her wedding with a sense of calm.

Speaking to Oprah she said: “I’ve thought about this a lot because it was like having an out-of-body experience I was very present for.

“That’s the only way I can describe it because the night before I slept through the night entirely.

“This in and of itself is a bit of a miracle.”

She added that she prepared for her wedding by listening to the song, ‘Going to the Chapel’.

She said that she, “tried to make it fun and light and remind ourselves that this was our day”.

She added: “But I think we were both really aware, even in advance of that just, this wasn’t our day.

“This was the day that was planned for the world.”
