Meghan Markle Instagram BACKLASH: New post bombs after unfollowing Kate and other royals

Yesterday Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry made the unusual move to unfollow fellow royals on Instagram, including the official Royal Family account, Kate and Prince William’ KensingtonRoyal account and Princess Eugenie’s. The shock move was made in order to promote charitable causes close to Meghan and Harry’s heart as the couple replaced their original 23 followings with 16 news ones. But the decision to axe the accounts has not gone down well among some royal fans, with some suggesting it could be the reason why the post has underperformed in comparison to other posts on the @Sussexroyal account.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Instagram account posted an image yesterday to commemorate Mental Health Awareness Month in the US and the UK’s Mental Health Awareness Week.

The post revealed Meghan and Harry are employing a new strategy by following new accounts each month that represent a particular charitable endeavour.

Currently, the 16 accounts followed are linked to mental health.

The SussexRoyal account said: “Each month we will honour this same concept and change the accounts we solely follow based on a different theme or cause.

“Please go to our homepage and click ‘following’ to see each of the select accounts and find out more about their work.”

But since going live yesterday the post has received just over 135,000 likes, significantly lower than other posts which typically receive around 500,000.

One Twitter user has suggested it is because other royal accounts were unfollowed, they wrote: “Sitting at 117k likes, this latest IG post from #sussexroyal on mental health and mental fitness is turning out to be the least popular on their page.

“Could the manufactures and ridiculous outrage of their unfollowing Princess Eugenie be why?”

Others have commented on the Instagram post itself to vent their outrage that other royals have been unfollowed.

One wrote: “What? They unfollowed the Queen? How disrespectful.”

Another wrote: “So ironic. Their caption says ‘we’re all in this together’ while simultaneously unfollowing the other royal channels.”

A third wrote: “It seems strange that Harry + Meghan have made a decision to unfollow all royal social media ‘connections’ yet their post is about alerting people and encouraging people to ‘reach out and make connections’. Umm ironic much?”

But not everyone is opposed to the move, with some royal fans thanking the couple for raising awareness of mental health.

One Instagram user wrote: “I love this idea – great move to support worthwhile causes!”

Despite unfollowing Kate and Prince William, Meghan and Harry still wished their niece Princess Charlotte a happy birthday in a heartwarming message on Instagram.

The royal couple commented on an image of the young princess posted by her parents.

The comment read: “Happy Birthday Charlotte! Lots of love, H and M xo”.

The move also comes as Meghan and Harry are preparing to welcome their first child as the Duchess is expected to give birth to her royal baby any day now.
