Meghan Markle heartache: Kate and William didn’t support Duchess and Harry in privacy war
Meghan and Prince Harry legal challenge and calls for privacy were not backed by other senior royals, according to Richard Palmer, the Daily Express royal correspondent. The journalist, who this morning revealed Queen Elizabeth often visits the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at Frogmore Cottage to check how they are, said Kate and Prince William have not done enough to help.
He wrote on Twitter: “There has been no support from within the Royal Family, as far as I can tell, for Harry and Meghan’s confrontational approach to the media.
“They are out on a limb on that. The Queen, Charles and Camilla, and the Cambridges don’t think it a good idea and there have been words.”
The royal correspondent added, as he understood, the Queen was “disappointed” over how Meghan and Harry have been dealing with the press in the past months, since becoming the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
He continued: “They’ve all had their ups and downs with the media but the Queen is disappointed how it’s all turned out in the first 18 months of the Sussexes’ marriage.
“Like others in the family, she is concerned about their emotional wellbeing and she sees them regularly.”
A spokesperson for Meghan and Harry set the record straight on whether the Sussexes will spend Christmas with the rest of the Royal Family at Sandringham.
Following days of speculation, the spokesperson confirmed the Sussexes will break with tradition and will spend Christmas Day with Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland rather than the Queen.
Saying the couple were “looking forward to extended family time”, they added: “Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, Their Royal Highnesses will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the Duchess’ mother Doria Ragland.
“This decision is in line with precedent set previously by other members of the Royal Family, and has the support of Her Majesty The Queen.”
The spokesperson said the palace won’t add further details concerning where Meghan, Archie and Harry will stay over the festive period due to security reasons.
Kate and Prince William had also decided in the past to spend Christmas with the Duke of Cambridge’s in-laws, and spent the festive period with the Middletons in Berkshire rather than in Norfolk.
Mr Palmer added Meghan and Harry haven’t been “excommunicated” from the Royal Family but, on the other hand, senior royals agree they need some time off.
He wrote: “The Sussexes, contrary to the views of some, have not been excommunicated from the Firm.
“Everyone recognises they need to take some time out.”
Their plans about Christmas haven’t been discussed with the Queen, Mr Palmer also understood.
He continued: “My understanding was that yesterday morning they were minded to spend Christmas away from Sandringham but had not finalised their plans.
“They had not told the Queen what they had decided to do about Christmas.
“Once they had, they made an announcement because of the amount of media interest in the story.”
