Described as perfect for podcasts and audiobooks, the Duchess of Sussex’s Californian accent has been identified as relaxing.

Natalie Eastwood, a vocal rehabilitation expert for performing experts, said that Meghan’s slow and deliberate delivery soothes audiences.

Natalie Eastwood, a vocal rehabilitation expert for performing experts, said that Meghan’s slow and deliberate delivery soothes audiences.

In her study, which the clinical lead in voice at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital teamed up with tech firm Huawei for, she reported on the significance of voices and their ability to capture audiences.

The Duchess was rated top by the vocal expert who analysed dozens of celebrity voices according to their tone, volume, pitch and rate of speech, to deduce who is the most soothing.

Huawei’s Anson Zhang agreed that a soothing voice is pivotal in captivating an audience: “When listening to audiobooks or podcasts for longer periods of time, comfort is key”.

The comments from Ms Eastwood praise the former Suits actress, saying that her voice has the ability to “soothe, calm and motivate” as she “varies her rate, pitch and volume for emphasis”.

The Duchess, who turned 40 this month, has recently signed an £18 million deal with Spotify for a podcast series. She has also recently released an audio version of her first children’s book The Bench.

Most people speak at an average speed of four to five syllables per second, so the average person speaks approximately 100 – 130 words per minute.

The expert praises Meghan’s delivery and pacing which she refers to as relatively slow – with an average of 105 words per minute – and says she speaks in deliberate means with plenty of pauses and “mild breathiness”.

The vocal expert has analysed a host of other famous names’ delivery including Stephen Fry and Richard E Grant.

Mr Fry, who has narrated all seven Harry Potter audiobooks plus other household names like Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and A Bear Called Paddington, was praised for his “captivating, colourful and calming” voice.

The vocal expert described his pronunciation as “authoritative” and claimed there is a “technical brilliance” to his articulation and delivery.

In contrast, the expert claims former US president Barack Obama has a “’confident, commanding pitch” which makes him sound powerful, and that Danny Dyer’s Cockney accent lends itself well to conveying “emotion and encouragement”.

The Duchess narrated the Disney live-action documentary Elephant back in April. Using a soothing and almost playful delivery, Meghan described the story in a beneficial way for children, the predominant audience.

Her narration in the documentary, which is available on streaming service Disney+, was described by Vanity Fair as “engaging”.

A review from the publication stated that the Duchess has “a warming voice of omniscience who gives lively shape to a story that’s . . . well, true in the purest sense”.

The Sussexes featured on their Archewell Audio Spotify podcast for a 2020 Christmas special, but haven’t published anything further in the past seven months.

When discussing their intentions for the podcast, the royal couple hoped it would “uplift and entertain audiences around the world’ as they speak with a range of people who “inspire” them.
