Neither Meghan’s father nor her half-siblings were at the royal wedding last May and all have spoken to the media on multiple occasions to both criticise the Duchess of Sussex and to ask her to reach out. However there was conflict in Meghan’s family before she was even born that could still be affecting the family dynamic. It was Samantha, whose birth name was Yvonne, and Thomas Jnr who were at each other’s throats growing up.

Both are significantly older than Meghan, with Samantha being 17 when Meghan was born.

According to 2018 book ‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’ Samantha and Thomas Jnr were the “sibling rivals from hell”.

Royal biographer Andrew Morton explained how Samantha and Thomas Jnr’s parents split up when they were young and they initially lived with their mother, before moving to California to live with their father.

Samantha moved when she was around 14 years old and Thomas Jnr moved a few years later just in time to start High School.

Mr Morton said: “Though he still idolised his father, there was one big fat fly in the ointment of his new life – his sister Yvonne.

“They’d always fought like cat and dog – the sibling rivals from hell.”

He described several incidents during their life in California that highlight this rivalry.

He wrote: “When the trio moved from Santa Monica to a large home on Providencia Street [Los Angeles], adjacent to the Woodland Hills Country Club, Tom Jnr snagged the downstairs den as his bedroom.

“He was especially thrilled when a friend sold him a king-sized waterbed.

“His excitement turned to dismay when he sat on it shortly after taking delivery only to be soaked in water.

“Inspecting the evidence, he discovered several holes in the brand new bed.

“There was only one suspect: his sister Yvonne immediately admitted responsibility, but argued that it was retribution as she had wanted that room for herself.”

Tom Jnr did not have kind words for his sister, claiming she called their black step-mother Doria Ragland “the maid”.

He added that Samantha had a fascination with black magic that “disturbed” him.

Another episode in their “bitter resentful dance” was when Samantha came to the flower shop where Thomas Jnr worked to borrow money from him.

While he was busy serving customers, she drew a pentagram and wrote ‘666’ on his colleague Richard’s bible.

Thomas managed to get back at her by telling her that Richard was so traumatised he had run into the road and was hit by a bus.

She apparently then raced back to the shop to check on Richard’s condition.
