Ellen Degeneres has been at the centre of controversy for over a year as ex-employees accused the host of being “cold’, “demeaning” and a “nightmare.” Meghan Markle’s appearance on the show had been kept secret until the day before when Ellen posted a teaser for the interview on Twitter. Some questioned Meghan’s appearance, branding it an odd choice for the Duchess of Sussex amid the claims against Ellen. 

Meghan and Prince Harry have been friends with Ellen for some years and she has previously defended the couple against media scrutiny.

Royally Obsessed hosts Roberta Fiorito and Rachel Bowie discussed the Duchess of Sussex’s interview on the podcast. 

Ms Fiorito said: “Meghan went on Ellen on Thursday. We actually missed it, I saw the news bulletin and I thought it was actually just a teaser for the fact that she’d be on the next day. So apologies. Apologies.

“So this is the last season after 19 seasons of Ellen this is their last one.

“The toxic workplace allegations, the bullying at work. There’s a lot that came out in the past year.

“Eleven staff members came forward and spoke to BuzzFeed News in May of last year about the toxic workplace.

“Ellen always ends the show about being kind to one another, telling the audience members to be kind to one another, but what was really going on behind the scenes is completely in stark contrast to that mantra. So it’s really interesting a choice for Megan to go on this.”

Ms Fiorito added: “I think that was my initial reaction, I know that they’re really good friends, they go way back to her Suits days, but I did feel like one of the wonderful things about Harry and Megan being away from the Royal Family is how they’ve chosen the different outlets and people that they speak with and talk to.

“This weekend I was walking home and I queued up teenager therapy, which is a podcast I discovered through Meghan and Harry and I love that it was a new perspective to hear as an adult lady.

“So I think that those allegations against Ellen come to my forefront when I think about that appearance.”

Meghan said on the show that along with Prince Harry, Princess Eugenie, and Jack Brooksbank, the group had secretly visited a Halloween party in 2016, just before their relationship was made public.

She claimed it was their “final fun night out,” before the world found out about the couple dating. 

She also said that the family is enjoying their new life in California.

The Duchess of Sussex said: “The lifestyle, the weather’s pretty great. We’re just happy.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior members of the British Royal Family in January 2020.
