The difficult relationship between the media and Meghan looks set to be rewritten by new claims emerging from Finding Freedom, the much-anticipated biography on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The book by royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand has stated the Duchess of Sussex had “occasionally” flirted with the media.

An extract from the book published today by The Times claims Meghan, as an actress based in Toronto, had sought the attention of paparazzi and reporters.

Speaking about how Meghan and Harry tried to keep their blossoming relationship far from the limelight during their first months together, the authors wrote: “While Meghan, before she met Harry, had occasionally set up a paparazzi photo here and there or let info slip out to the press, she did everything in her power to protect the privacy of her relationship with the prince.”

Meghan’s relationship with the press is also mentioned in a paragraph describing how the now-Duke and Duchess of Sussex were scrambling to keep their relationship off the news.

Claiming a paparazzo had Meghan’s phone number, the authors wrote: “One night late in October in Toronto, Harry was happy, and so was Meghan.

“Until they received a call from one of Harry’s aides at Kensington Palace. It wasn’t good news.

“A tabloid was going to run with the story of their relationship.

“Their main worry was that her place would be besieged by photographers within 24 hours.

“They had a little time to think, because there were only a couple of paparazzi in Toronto.

“(One of them had already texted Meghan to ask if the news was true; she didn’t reply.)”

The story was eventually published by the Sunday Express in October 2016, six months after Meghan and Harry first met on a blind date set up by a friend in common believed to have been fashion designer Misha Nonoo.

During the months in which they secretly dated, Meghan left a few hints on social media regarding her love interest.

Meghan shared several selfies on her now defunct personal Instagram account in which was visible a friendship bracelet identical to the one sported by Prince Harry.

After their first solo date, Meghan shared on the social media a photo of a Love Hearts candy with the inscription “Kiss Me” and the caption “Lovehearts in #London”.

A few weeks after Meghan and Harry’s romance was made public, the Duke of Sussex published a rare statement confirming he was dating the actress.

In the lengthy announcement, shared by Kensington Palace while Prince Charles and Camilla were undertaking an important tour to the Middle East, Harry also asked the press to take into consideration the privacy of Meghan and her family.

Revelations regarding Meghan’s former relationship with paparazzi and members of the press come as the Duchess of Sussex is suing the Mail on Sunday’s publisher, Associated Newspapers, alleging breach of data regulation laws and a breach of her right to privacy.

A Meghan and Harry’s spokesman denied any links between the Sussexes and the biography.

A statement said: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not interviewed and did not contribute to Finding Freedom.

“This book is based on the authors’ own experiences as members of the royal press corps and their own independent reporting.”
