Meghan looked typically stylish on Tuesday when she appeared in a virtual panel part of The New York Times’ Dealbook summit. The Duchess of Sussex wore a black short-sleeve cashmere jumper paired with wide black trousers.
She accessorised her look with a pair of black stilettos, a gold buckle belt by designer Ferragamo and multiple gold bracelets.
Among them, there was a gold-and-diamond Eye of Protection piece of jewellery designed by Mateo Harris of Mate New York, according to the Huffington Post.
The hand-painted bracelet, made in New York City, is sold for £1,100 ($1,500).
Its description on the jeweller’s website read: “Beautifully made in New York city of 14kt gold, diamond and hand-painted with enamel by skilled artisans.
“The Eye of Protection is a classic and essential piece which you will never want to take off.
“Ward off undesired energy with this bracelet and attract good vibes only.”
Meghan’s outfit took by surprise Mr Harris, who said he had “no clue” she would appear on the panel wearing one of his pieces.
Explaining Meghan was one of the people he had hoped to eventually see wearing his brand, he told the Post: “I almost had a meltdown.
“I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I’m gonna have a panic attack today’.”
Mr Harris also explained he is superstitious and loves the Eye of Protection himself.
He added: “For her to have on this great piece of personal jewellery really means a lot to me because, one, she’s protected.
“In my mind, I like to think that I blessed my jewellery. So it’s a great piece to have.”
This isn’t the first time Meghan wears a piece of jewellery including a deeply symbolic eye.
In late September 2019, during the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s tour of South Africa, Meghan was spotted donning a £450 necklace including a so-called “Evil Eye” which, according to superstitious beliefs dating back centuries, keeps away negative thoughts and energy.
During her visit to the Nyanga township in Cape Town on her first day in South Africa, Meghan donned an 18-carat gold chain from Alemdara, a brand whose design is heavily inspired by Turkish symbols.
The necklace also presented a beady eye and a hand symbol.
Wearing the eye, according to Alemdara’s website, “wards off jealousy from others”.
On Tuesday, Meghan also wore a Remembrance Day red poppy on her jumper.
The poppy is normally worn in the UK in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday to remember those who have given their lives in battle.
The Queen famously wears every year a beautiful brooch with five poppies, believed to be a tribute to each branch of the armed forces that took part in the war: Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Civil Defence and women.
During her latest appearance, Meghan discussed with co-CEO and president of Ariel Investments Mellody Hobson how women can achieve professional and economic parity.
However, the Duchess also touched upon other topics, including how she and Harry are leading their organisation Archewell, her views on campaigning for topics she is passionate about and media coverage.
The Duchess said she does not believe cold-calling US senators and writing an open letter to push forward the battle of paid parental leave in her homeland is a political issue.
She said: “This issue is not red or blue, people need support when they have a child.
“I don’t see this as a political issue, I know certainly my husband’s family do not get involved in politics but I am passionate.”
