Former royal butler Paul Burrell has spoken out about the Duchess of Sussex, claiming that the former Suits actress could become “Governor of California”. The 65-year-old, who worked for the late Princess Diana for 10 years, has claimed that it would be wrong to underestimate Meghan. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex settled into life in America after announcing they were to step down as senior working royals in January 2020, less than two years into their marriage.

In an interview with Slingo, Burrell said: “Don’t underestimate Meghan, she’s ambitious.

“And what if she became Governor of California and lords it over Hollywood.”

Speaking of Meghan and Prince Harry’s potential of becoming a “power couple”, the former royal butler added: “It’s not so far-fetched because they have to keep going on, they have to keep reinventing themselves because if they don’t, that brand is going to disappear, the Sussex brand will disappear.”

Burrell then mentioned a few other famous actors who have ventured into Governorship – citing Arnold Schwarzenegger as one.

He encouraged the couple to consider going to “do some public service”, emphasising that “it’s time”.

Considering whether Harry and Meghan knows the impact they have had on people, Burrell said: “[It’s like] somebody had the wool pulled over their eyes.”

The former royal butler then discusses the end of Meghan and Harry’s multi-million-pound deal with Spotify and claims that the couple likely “misunderstood what was expected of them”.

But he claims that he believes the couple have the power to win over the public again and, despite recent blows, have a chance to leave a legacy for the late Princess Diana’s name.

He added: “I do think there’s a world out there that is still fascinated by it all, by them.”

For Meghan, Burrell added that she could have a path of opportunities ahead to “grow tentacles in different areas”.

Burrell concluded: “Why wouldn’t someone want to take a risk with that and create something for Meghan then that would give her a foothold and a platform to launch herself into fashion?.”
