Ofcom recieved over 40,000 complaints from the public over Piers Morgan’s comments about Meghan Markle’s mental health crisis during her time in the Royal Family. On the ITV breakfast show on Monday, Morgan said he “didn’t believe a word” Meghan had told interviewer Oprah Winfrey about having suicidal thoughts while she was pregnant with her son Archie.

The regulator said: “We can confirm receipt of a standards complaint made on behalf of the Duchess of Sussex.”

In the interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Duchess said: “I just didn’t want to be alive any more. That was a clear, real, frightening and constant thought.”

On Monday morning’s GMB broadcast, Piers questioned whether she was telling the truth.

He said: “Who did you go to? What did they say to you? I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she said, Meghan Markle. I wouldn’t believe it if she read me a weather report.”

Piers has been widely criticised for his comments about the duchess, who spoke candidly about her mental health struggles in the interview.

In Tuesday morning’s broadcast, he sought to clarify his comments.

He said: “When we talked about this yesterday, I said as an all-encompassing thing, I don’t believe what Meghan Markle is saying generally in this interview, and I still have serious concerns about the veracity of a lot of what she said.

“But let me just state on the record my position about mental illness and on suicide.

“These are clearly extremely serious things that should be taken extremely seriously, and if someone is feeling that way they should get the treatment and help they need every time.”

He later stormed out of the show when he was questioned by his colleague Alex Beresford, who confronted him over the sour remarks.

Mr Beresford said: “I understand you’ve got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle, or had one, and she cut you off.

“She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to.

“Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has, but yet you continue to trash her.”
