Queen Elizabeth II told her then-future granddaughter-in-law she would lend her a tiara before May 19.

An appointment was made in February for Meghan to examine a selection of appropriate tiaras at Buckingham Palace.

Ms Markle, who starred as Rachel Zane in the US legal drama Suits, attended the appointment alongside Prince Harry and the Queen’s dresser Angela Kelly.

However, Ms Markle and Ms Kelly reportedly had a disagreement involving the tiara and the future Duchess of Sussex’s hairdresser, Serge Normant.

Accounts then differ as to what happened at that meeting.

According to the Mail on Sunday, an insider claimed: “Meghan demanded access to the tiara.

“She didn’t make an appointment with Angela but said, ‘We’re at Buckingham Palace. We want the tiara. Can we have it now please?’

“Angela essentially said, ‘I’m very sorry, that’s not how it works.

“‘You can’t turn up and demand to have the tiara just because your hairdresser happens to be in town’.”

However, it is not entirely clear what happened during the clash, Valentine Low, royal correspondent for The Times, explained in an extract in his new book, Courtiers: the Hidden Power Behind the Crown, which is set to be released on October 6.

Sources differ about Ms Markle’s request, some claim it was not allowed under royal protocol but others insist Ms Kelly was being obstructive.
