Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s recent tour of New York was “definitely a Diana-inspired trip” claimed a royal commentator after the Duchess made a number of significant “nods” to her late mother-in-law. During their three-day stay, Meghan was spotted holding a Dior Lady D-Lite bag, one of Princess Diana’s fashion staples and go-to handbags, to the Global Citizen Live concert.
Royal commentator Molly Mulshine said: “This was a very on-the-nose reference, if I’m allowed to say that.
“She carried the Lady D-Lite bag which is Dior, it used to be called the Chouchou bag and they changed it to the Lady Dior when Diana was seen carrying it.
“This is a spin-off of that bag so it’s the Lady D-Lite, and she not only had that Diana-inspired bag, but she also had a Duchess of Sussex monogram on the bag which was D-S-S-O-S, which is a lot of letters.
“I’m assuming that this was probably a gift from someone or a gift from Dior.
“It was definitely a nod to her late mother-in-law.”
She continued: “There were a lot of nods to her, they stayed at The Carlyle which was Diana’s favourite hotel, there were a lot of outfits that looked kind of similar, there was the camel coat over the black.
“This was was definitely a very Diana-inspired trip I would say.”
Princess Diana was gifted the Dior handbag in 1995 by French Prime Minister Jacques Chirac’s wife Bernadette and soon began to wear it regularly to official engagements.

In the final two years of her life, she bought the bag in a number of colours, and brought it with her to the 1996 Met Gala in New York. Fashion house Dior later renamed the bag to Lady D due to its association with the Princess of Wales.
As for Meghan’s bag, it was a Lady D-Lite bag, a style that was launched in 2019. It maintains the same silhouette but has the additional feature of a reversible and removable shoulder strap that makes its slightly sportier.
As well as her handbag, Meghan also paid tribute to Diana with her gold Cartier Tank Française watch.
The Duchess of Sussex has worn the accessory on a number of occasions, including last October at a Fortune magazine virtual summit.

Princess Diana frequently wore the expensive watch during the late 1990s. It was given to Prince William upon her death, who later handed it to his younger brother in exchange for Diana’s engagement ring, which he wished to give to his long-term girlfriend, Kate Middleton.
As well as the watch, Meghan is also in possession of a Cartier diamond bracelet that used to belong to Prince Harry’s late mother.
Two of the diamonds were used for her engagement ring, and she also wore the bracelet during the couple’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Princess Diana died in 1997 at the age of 36. She was known as a global fashion icon and was the most photographed woman in the world at the time of her death in a car accident.
