Meghan Markle is celebrating her 40th birthday today and senior members of the Royal Family have reached out to congratulate her on social media. While tensions have been running high between the Sussexes and the Firm in recent months, one royal commentator has claimed the birthday messages were to be expected.

Queen Elizabeth II, 95, has maintained Harry and Meghan remain much-loved members of her family despite royal dramas and was the first to reach out on Twitter on Wednesday.

A message from the Queen’s official Royal Family account read: “Wishing The Duchess of Sussex a very Happy Birthday today!”

The tweet featured a sweet montage of photos of Meghan including one of her with the Queen.

Kate and William’s message to Meghan read: “Wishing a happy 40th birthday to The Duchess of Sussex!”

While Charles and Camilla’s read: “Wishing The Duchess of Sussex a very happy 40th birthday.”

All three tweets were accompanied by pictures of Meghan beaming.

Earlier this year Harry and Meghan sent shockwaves through the royal household when they made damning allegations against the Firm during a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.

These ranged from Meghan’s claim the institution ignored her pleas for support with her mental health and an alleged instance of racism by a senior member of the family.

While the Queen responded to the interview with a curt statement that said issues raised in it would be dealt with by the family in private, Harry has continued to speak out about family matters in public.

The Duke fired shots at his father Prince Charles during two podcast interviews as well as in his Apple TV mental health series with Oprah.

When Harry returned to the UK last month to unveil a new statue of his late mother Princess Diana at Kensington Palace, he and Prince William, 39, appeared to have publically reconciled.

However, news Harry is to pen a tell-all memoir about his life that is due to be published in 2022 – the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is understood to have ruffled royal feathers once more.

Fears the book could contain further accusations against the Firm has prompted speculation the Sussexes may be blocked from attending Jubilee celebrations.

Reacting to the Firm’s birthday messages to Meghan, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “As expected, tweets from the Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall and the Cambridge’s have wished Meghan a happy birthday as she turns 40 today.”

Mr Fitzwilliams said: “The last 18 months have been a torrid time, with relations between the Royal Family and the Sussexes so strained.

The Firm may hope Meghan focuses her energy on the Sussex brand going forward, Mr Fitzwilliams claimed.

He added: “As speculation mounts about her possible political ambitions in the future, the Royal Family must be hoping while wishing her well, that she is able to channel her energies and promotion of the Sussexes brand, which has a global reach, into areas where she will find a constructive outlet.”

Harry and Meghan could travel back to the UK next year to take part in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
