Meghan Markle baby: Why Meghan and Harry had to pay more for their royal baby

Meghan Markle, 35, and Prince Harry, 38, welcomed their son Archie Harrison into the world in the early hours of May 6. The royal tot will be six-months-old tomorrow and has already travelled to Ibiza, South Africa and France with his parents.

Journeys abroad aside, little Archie cost his parents’ more than any other royal baby has at birth for this very specific reason.

Even royal family members have to register births and a rise in the amount it costs to do so affected the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in May.

They were the first royals to have to pay the increased charge of £11 to register Archie’s birth.

The General Register Office of England and Wales hiked up the price last February.

While it had previously cost just £4 to register the arrival of your little one, the price was more than doubled in May.

Prince Harry and Meghan are hardly hard up thanks to Meghan’s successful acting career and Harry’s royal family wealth, so it is unlikely they gave they change much thought.

However, as a dual US and UK citizen there is another reason Archie Harrison might just be most expensive royal baby yet.

US native Meghan Markle is proud of her American roots and has held onto her nationality despite moving to and marrying Britain.

She is understood to want to raise baby Archie as both American and British and as the son of an American, he must pay tax in both countries until he is 18.

According to the US Department of State guidelines, Archie has US citizenship because he was born in wedlock abroad to an American citizen who has lived in the US for a period of five years, at least two of which were after the age of 14.

This means that throughout baby Archie’s life, he will have his assets and income exposed to US taxes.

This includes any “unearned income” over $2,100 – until he is 18 years old and can choose to renounce his citizenship if he wishes to do so.

While the royal family’s finances are usually kept under wraps they could be exposed to the US tax authority the IRS in order to insure both Meghan and Archie are paying enough tax back home.

Meghan Markle and Harry are due to take a six week break from royal duty later this month.

They are expected to travel to the US with baby Archie for the first time.

Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland lives in LA and they are likely to take Archie to visit her for Thanksgiving.

Ahead of their holiday, Meghan and Harry have several Remembrance Day royal engagements in London.
