Karl von Habsburg, Archduke of Austria and the head of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, lashed out at Meghan and Harry in the wake of their much-discussed interview with Oprah. Austria’s Archduke said: “The two are so far behind in the line of succession, if not to say practically non-existent, that they play no role at all in this regard.

“And for that reason alone, such a globally broadcast appearance seems completely inappropriate to me.

“If there are actually problems or dissonances in the private sphere, then it would be more appropriate to discuss and clarify such things specifically in a private setting.

“For me, this media-staged appearance is a non-issue. It is only internal gossip and garbage.”

The Archduke is the son of Archduke Otto von Habsburg, the last Crown Prince of Austria, and Princess Regina of Saxe-Meiningen.

He is also the grandson of the last Austro-Hungarian emperor, Charles I, who succeeded Franz Joseph to the imperial throne following his death in 1916 and was formally dethroned in 1919 by the Austrian Parliament.

The Archduke is a politician, who has focused much of his career on protecting cultural heritage from threats such as armed conflict and natural disasters.

Since 1986, he has been president of the Austrian branch of the Paneuropean Union and was an MEP for the Austrian People’s Party between 1996 and 1999.

The Archduke’s comment comes only a few days after Meghan and Prince Harry sat down for an extraordinary interview with Oprah.

The two-hour-long landmark chat with the US journalist touched upon several topics – including the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s relationship with other royals.

Prince Harry said his relationship with Prince William is one “of space” at the moment.

He also told Oprah he “feels let down” by his father Prince Charles, saying: “There’s a lot to work through there.

“I feel really let down because he’s been through something similar.

“He knows what pain feels like, and Archie’s his grandson.

“At the same time I will always love him, but there’s a lot of hurt that’s happened.

“I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship, but they only know what they know.”

And Meghan discussed claims she had left in tears Kate, saying it was actually the other way round, with the Duchess of Cambridge making her cry – and later apologising for it – in the run-up to the Sussexes’ wedding.

Moreover, it saw Meghan and Harry claiming “concerns” were raised over the colour of Archie’s skin while the Duchess was pregnant with him and accused the Firm of not supporting the Duchess of Sussex when she was suicidal.

However, the couple spared criticism for the Queen, with Meghan saying the 94-year-old monarch has aways been “wonderful” to her.

Speaking about the thin line between the Royal Family as a family and as a business, she told Oprah: “It’s hard for people to distinguish the two because it’s a family business, there’s the family, and then there are the people that are running the institution, those are two separate things and it’s important to be able to compartmentalise that because the Queen, for example, has always been wonderful to me.”

While the monarch issued a statement on Tuesday, Prince William became today the first member of the Royal Family to speak in public about the interview.

The Duke was visiting with Kate a school in east London when he was asked whether he had already spoken to his brother.

He replied: “I haven’t spoken to him yet, but I will do.”

Pressed by the reporter on whether the Royal Family is racist, William added: “We are very much not a racist family”.
