Republic campaigns for the monarchy to be abolished and the Queen to be replaced with an elected, democratic head of state. Graham Smith, the organisation’s CEO, told Express.co.uk that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not receive any expenses payments or funding from the US taxpayer whilst living in America.
Mr Smith said: “I think it would be an anathema to any US taxpayer to pay for anybody’s expenses unless they were official expenses.
“Even the President cannot get away with that.
“They have very strict rules and boundaries regarding what is private and public.
“You do not get to spend the taxpayer’s money unless you are spending it on the taxpayer’s interests.”
During the same interview, Mr Smith stated that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been told to fund themselves following their decision to “abandon” the Royal Family.
The CEO of Republic told Express.co.uk that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex should not be funded by the UK taxpayer whether they are based in Britain or abroad.
Mr Smith said: “We should not be funding Meghan and Harry at all whether they are abroad or here.
“Certainly, now that they have abandoned any pretence of doing official engagements or giving anything back to the taxpayer, we have no reason to fund them at all.
“They are very wealthy, their estimated combined wealth is more than £30million.”
He added: “I think most people would be surprised by any suggestion that people sitting on £30million in the bank might struggle in any way financially.
“So I think if they want to live the lifestyle that people with £100million do then they have a problem.
“But I think they will be absolutely fine and we don’t owe them a living, we don’t owe them a penny.
