Meghan, 40, and Harry, 37, took the Big Apple by storm in September, carrying out several meetings and visits. Prominent biographer Andrew Morton believes this will just be the first of many more tours by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – following their decision to step down as senior royals.
Mr Morton, author of an updated edition of Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, also drew a parallel between the Sussexes and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to highlight Meghan and Harry’s global reach following their royal exit.
Asked whether Meghan and Harry could carry out more tours on US soil and abroad, he told Express.co.uk: “Yes, absolutely.
“Just think the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, that’s the nearest parallel.
“He married an American divorcee and then they went on several, quite controversial tours, including one to Nazi Germany.
“When they went to America, there were more people who came out to see them in Baltimore, New York and Washington than came out to see the King and Queen.
“So there is no denying they still have global popularity.”
Express.co.uk has contacted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for comment.
The Duke and Duchess of Windsor – former King Edward VIII and socialite Wallis Simpson – visited the US in 1940, one year after King George VI became the first British reigning monarch to set foot on American soil.
Meghan and Harry arrived in New York on September 22 and carried out their first visit on the following day.
They met New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Mayor Bill de Blasio and his family at the One World Trade Center.
After a photocall at the observatory, the Sussexes were seen paying tribute to the victims of the 9/11 terror attack.
The Duchess appeared delighted to have returned to a city she is known to love, and told reporters in attendance: “It’s wonderful to be back”.
The pair later had a meeting with US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield, focused on issues close to their heart: racial justice, mental health and vaccine equity.
Much of their trip to New York was focused on raising awareness on the importance of distributing COVID-19 vaccines around the world to end the pandemic.
The couple attended a roundtable discussion organized at the World Health Organization’s offices to discuss the issue with world leaders, experts and activists – including Chelsea Clinton.
Meghan and Harry also spoke about vaccine equity on the stage of Global Citizen Live, a 24-hour-long event during which many participants called on wealthy nations to distribute vaccines to developing countries.
Visiting a school in Harlem, where Meghan read her book The Bench, they highlighted the importance of literacy in early childhood and made important donations of herbs and vegetables to promote healthy eating.
Through their foundation’s partnership with Procter & Gamble, the Sussexes also donated personal health and hygiene supplies. They planned to give a washer and dryer for pupils to use to wash their uniforms.
After this visit, the couple had lunch at soul food restaurant Melba’s in south Harlem, to which they donated $25,000 for the restaurant’s employee relief fund.
Discussing Meghan and Harry’s visit to the Big Apple, Mr Morton said it was a “testament to their pulling power”.
He said: “They are celebrities with a royal background, that visit was testament to their pulling power, the fact that the Governor of New York and the Mayor of New York accompanied them showed that as far as they are concerned they can get political kudos from being associated with Meghan and Harry.
“They are a hot couple and they will remain a hot couple for some time to come.”
